□ Purpose& contents
In order to understand charge transfer on the nanoscale, firstly we study the charge carrier transport characteristics in quantum dots(QD) with various kinds, sizes, and shapes, typical nano-sized building elements, secondly, we investigate the charge transfer in the assembly of quantum dots such as QD-artificial molecules/compounds, and QD-superlattices, thirdly we explore the charge transfer across the various interfaces between QDs, or QD and functional ligands, QD and electrolytes. Ultimately we create the optoelectronic materials built from new nano building elements, i.e. artifiicial atoms(called QDs) with desired optoelectrical conversion efficiency.
□ Result
Through this research, we developed environmentally benign precursors and QDs. Using quantum confinement effect and alloy composition variation, we can generate the desirable environmentally friendly QDs with adjustable band gap energy. We also found the environmentally benign reaction conditions and methods to produce QDs in a gram-scale. In order to understand charge transfer on the nanoscale, we fabricated the layer-structured QD-LEDs with various interfaces and understood the charge transport through those layers. We were able to accomplish the 1st practical colloidal QD-based UV-LEDs worldwide. The 1st world result for colloidal UV-LED was reported on C&EN. We also found that electron injection was facilitated through the interface between the semiconductor tetrapods and organic-polymer composites.
□ Expected Contribution
Environmentally friendly synthetic conditions and methods for the production of colloidal QDs will be available for new optical materials, and can be industrialized. We can establish the fundamental understanding on the chemical interaction and the hierarchical general interaction force and mutual interaction force in QDs, 2-D QD thin films, 3-D QD solids, and QD-superlattices with quantum dots as building blocks. QDs are very promising optoelectronic materials for nanophosphors, QD-TV, QD-TRs, solid-state lightings, solar cells, and printable eelctronic devices. QDs, 2-D QD thin films, 3-D QD solids, and QD-superlattices are good systems to understand the charge transport on the nanoscale. These fundamental understanding is crucial to develop energy-efficient and highly bright optoelectronic devices or highly efficient energy conversion devices.
