□ Purpose&Contents
The specific aim of this research is to provide useful genes for the improvement of agronomic traits of crops derived from monocotyledonous plants by analyzing the functions of light signal-regulating genes isolated from the genome of Brachypodium distachyon and transgenic plants expressing phytochrome photoreceptors, which contributes to elucidating regulatory mechanisms of photoresponses in the monocot plant that has not yet been established.
□ Results
- In the case of papers, out of the goal of 6 SCI papers, 5 SCI papers including Nature Communications (IF 12.121) and 1 non-SCI paper were published by 2020, and one SCI paper is on-line published now. Thus, the goal was achieved.
- In the case of presentations in domestic and international conferences, out of the goal of 4 international/6 domestic cases, 9 international/11 domestic presentations were accomplished by 2020, which exceeded the goal. In particular, a topic related to Brachypodium phytochromes was presented as an invited speaker at “The 9th Asia and Oceania Conference of Photobiology (AOCP 2019)” international conference held in China in 2019.
- In the case of the registration and donation of life information, a total of three cases were created, one each year, as planned (transcriptome analysis data for the first and second years, and useful gene information for the last year).
- Qualitatively, 14 genes were obtained as Brachypodium light signal-regulating genes, including 5 BdPIF, 3 BdHY5, and 6 BdARGOS, and their functions were investigated.
- In addition, through yeast two-hybrid screening, several light signal-regulating genes were newly isolated, and BdphyA and chimeric phytochrome genes capable of regulating red light signaling as well as far-red light signaling were also secured.
- The regulatory mechanism of phytochrome-mediated light signaling in Brachypodium has been proposed, and useful genes that can increase the photoresponse and biomass of plants are provided (BdPHYB, BdARGOS etc.)
□ Expected Contribution
- Promote researches related to light signaling in monocotyledonous plants
- Propose the ways for enhancing plant productivity by inducing better optimized photoresponses using the useful monocot-originated genes obtained in this study
- Progress follow-up research projects using the results obtained
