< Development for groundwater information map and presenting large-scale groundwater resources >
The 4,329 of validated database (3,337 wells in fractured rock aquifer and 992 wells in alluvium aquifer) were selected out of total 14,847 wells. Based on the DB, various maps are developed such as hydrogeologic map, groundwater base map, specific capacity map, and groundwater potential map of the Geumgang River basin. Hydrogeological units should be basically considered for evaluating characteristics of groundwater yields and need to be evaluated by their hydrogeological factors such as pumping ability, specific capacity, transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity and storage coefficient, etc.. Hydrogeological units in the Geumgang River basin are newly classified into 9 groups: unconsolidated clastic sediments (subsurface geology are mainly Jurassic granitoids), clastic sedimentary rocks, carbonate rocks, non-porous volcanic rocks, Triassic-Jurassic intrusive igneous rocks, Cretaceous intrusive igneous rocks, metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, schists, crystalline metamorphic rocks. Two types of the intrusive igneous rocks show different features in the occurrence form, geomorphology and the thickness of weathered zone. Triassic-Jurassic intrusive igneous rocks occur as large batholith in the lower land and have very thick weathered zone, while Cretaceous intrusive igneous rocks occur as small stocks or dykes forming mountainous area with rare weathered zone.
Groundwater potential map is a kind of exploration technique to secure large-scale groundwater resources. For the Geumgang River basin, 10 thematic layers were collected and their initial weight were determined using analytical hierarchy process. Potential site for large-scale groundwater sources was selected through the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method. Finally, the groundwater potential in the Geumgang River basin was classified into 5 levels (Very high, High, Moderate, Low, Very low).
Hoein-myeon area at Boeun-gun, which is selected as demonstration field site, in the the Geumgang River basin was evaluated as one of the high potential area for groundwater development by several statistical approaches such as hot-spot analysis, water-balance estimation and data base analysis associated with hydrogeological parameters. The newly developed well produces groundwater satisfactory for a drinking water standard after long-term pumping and even at the beginning time of the pumping at a excellently high pumping rate.
Groundwater quality database including field parameters and major dissolved ions for the Geumgang River basin were constructed by compilation of previous data and evaluation of their reliability. Three groundwater information maps related to groundwater quality of hydrochemical water type map, groundwater nitrate map, groundwater quality index map, and nitrate health risk index map were prepared for the Geumgang River basin using the database. For the Nakdonggang River Basin, groundwater quality database was also being constructed using previous data and groundwater quality maps will be prepared.
< Development of sustainable groundwater utilization methods >
A field demonstration site for sustainable use and optimal management of groundwater resources adapting to the climate crisis such as mega-drought were chosen to be Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do in the Geumgang River Basin, where has been suffering from periodic water shortage areas. The Yesan site was selected as one of the water shortage area in the Geumgang River Basin through analyses of the five drought indices (PDSI, SPI, MSWSI, SMI, SGI) as natural factors and five water supply indices (water supply rate, revenue water ratio, water supply population, groundwater source, and valley/surface sources) as anthropogenic factors. In Yesan-gun, low hilly areas are widely developed centered on Sapgyo-eup. Based on the analysis of 625 core-logs, the bedrock is mostly granite and gneiss and the alluvial layer was distributed thickly in the center of the study area. The water balance analysis was used to determine the amount of groundwater recharge in Geumchi-ri, Bongsan-myeon, Yesan-gun, which is the study site.
In this study, the concept of the optimal groundwater development site within the constricted water shortage area was defined as the optimal location for a newly developed pumping well for groundwater use, and a simulation-optimization model was developed to determine the optimal location. The simulation-optimization model related to the groundwater management problem can be configured in the form of linking a simulation model for the groundwater flow (including solute/geothermal flow) and a optimization technique. This model determines the design that most satisfies the objective function as the optimal result through iterative calculations according to the algorithm of the optimization technique. As a next step, this model is going to be applied to the demo site with the reflection of the spatial distribution of hydraulic conductivity data, the current status of agricultural wells, the status of domestic water use, and other field condition.
Sustainability of groundwater can be defined as the development and use of groundwater in a way that can be maintained continuously without causing environmental, economic, and social problems. In this study, as part of a sustainable groundwater management system, groundwater sustainability indicators were selected and an optimal groundwater management technique was developed to supply domestic water in response to the groundwater environment and climate change in the study area.
< Prediction of long-term response of groundwater dependent ecosystem (GDE) >
Under the growing risks by climate change and water related disasters, various efforts are being made to predict and prepare for the impact of climate change. In order to proactively prepare for climate change and establish efficient adaptation measures, it is important to predict the future variability of water-related environment based on varying climate change scenarios and advanced scientific tools. Groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDE) are ecosystems that are supported by groundwater, including aquatic GDE (rivers, stream, lake, and wetlands), terrestrial GDE (deep-rooted plants), underground GDE (cave, underground ecosystems). Alternation groundwater environment by climate change will lead to modification in GDE, thereby posing various challenges in water cycles and health of GDE. Accordingly, the sustainable management of health of GDE highly depends on proper prediction of future variability of GDE in response to climate change.
In this project, we constructed three-dimensional fully integrated groundwater-surface water model to predict future response of integrated water systems. Different integrated models were constructed for four major water basin in Geumgang River basin. The integrated models were developed to reflect varying hydrological, meteorological, geological and anthropogenic conditions including stream distribution, precipitation, evapotranspiration, dam and weir, soil cover, land cover, geologic logging, pumping and so on. The integrated models were validated against measured stream discharge and groundwater monitoring data across the basins. Based on the calibrated model, we predicted the future response of the basin-scale integrated water systems under different climate change scenarios (RCP). The prediction results demonstrated the increasing seasonal and annual variability of stream discharges, exposing the water system into more extreme conditions (droughts, floods, etc.). The response of groundwater system to climate change is slow. Analysis of the interactions between groundwater and surface water highlighted the significance of groundwater in delaying the hydrological response of integrated water systems and sustaining surface flows under seasonally varying metrological condition.
The fully-integrated three dimensional model was then applied to different watershed, the Nakdonggang River basin, the largest water basin in South Korea. The integrated models reflect varying hydrological, meteorological, geological and anthropogenic conditions including stream distribution, spatially and temporally varying precipitation, evapotranspiration, dam and weir, soil cover, land cover, geologic logging, pumping and so on. The integrated models were validated against measured stream discharge and groundwater monitoring data across the basins using PEST (Parameter Estimation Tool). The comparison between observed and simulated data showed reasonable ranges of match to each other. Based on the calibrated model set-up, the future response of the integrated water system of Nakdonggang River basin will be predicted using different climate change scenarios.
To ensure the national groundwater security against climate change and develop the sustainable groundwater management policies, it is vital to understand the future vulnerability of groundwater system in response to climate change at nation-wide scale. In this study, we constructed the nation-scale water budget and groundwater simulation model including both North and South Korea and predicted the future vulnerability of groundwater system under different climate change scenarios. During this phase of the project, we first updated the nation-wide hydrologic and hydrogeological database (DB) that could affect the county-scale water cycle, including national scale leaf area index (LAI), water variability of islands, and DB of North Korea. Using the updated DB, we improved the pre-constructed water budget model (VELAS) and groundwater simulation model set-up and predicted the future variability of groundwater resources. The prediction results demonstrated increasing variability of groundwater levels, and general decrease in groundwater level (i.e. available groundwater resources) in high elevation area. The downward region of the country was less affected by the decrease in groundwater level, instead increasing risks of water floods and variations in groundwater level were predicted.
The rising air temperature by global warming is projected to alter the energy demand for heating/cooling. With an increasing demand of renewable energy to tackle global warming, the utilization of underground geothermal heat pump systems has continuously increased in South Korea. The changes in underground temperature by global warming and changes in heat/cooling energy demand could change the underground temperature, thereby affecting the efficiency of underground heat pump system. In this study, we developed a model to estimate future efficiency of the underground geothermal heat pump systems considering changes in underground temperature by climate change and changes in heat/cooling energy demand. The simulation results demonstrated that with a rising demand for cooling, the total heat load into underground system tends to increase, resulting in escalated underground temperature and decrease in efficiency of underground heat pump facilities. Our study results suggest that to optimize and ensure the long term operation of the underground heat pump system, it is necessary to maintain the annual balance between heat and cooling loads, such that excessive heat load by extensive use of cooling system does not lead to the significant disturbance to underground temperature system.
In an attempt to construct the national scale DB to monitor long term changes in climate change indicators of South Korea, the underground climate change monitoring system was constructed. The constructed system includes a total of 91 temperature sensors installed at different depths and other sensor to monitor meteorological elements. The long-term data obtained from system will help us to better understand the responses of subsurface system to climate change. The nation-wide and long-term collections of stable isotope of rainfall have been conducting cross the country, the result of which will give us insights to understand the long-term trend of isotope composition of rainfall as well as climate change impact on rainfall composition.
< Development of technology for evaluating water/mass exchange in groundwater-dependent according to climate change >
In the first year, we developed various monitoring technologies for evaluating the water/mass exchange in groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs) by climate change in lagoons, wetlands, and lakes. This study quantitatively evaluated the groundwater inflow/outflow characteristics using an environmental tracer (222Rn), numerical modeling, field conductivity measurement to estimate groundwater flow and groundwater-surface water interaction. Furthermore, we developed monitoring technologies for the biogeochemical nitrogen cycle using biogeochemistry and microbial genetic characteristics.
In the second year, the mid-to-long-term convergence monitoring system, including multidisciplinary approaches based on previously developed technologies, was established in the Songji lagoon located on the east coast of Korea. The Songji lagoon region is a brackish lake environment where groundwater-surface water-sea water actively interacts. We can observe a freshwater-saltwater mixing zone reflecting climate change, sea-level change, and topographical change over several thousand years. A multidisciplinary monitoring system combining hydrogeological, geophysical, hydro-biogeochemical, and microbial ecological methods has been established to assess the water and mass exchange in the groundwater-dependent ecosystem by climate change and the most sensitive factors to the groundwater-dependent ecosystem through long-term monitoring will be evaluated.
