Ⅳ. Results of the Work
○ Deep subsurface (1-5 km) characterization techniques (80%, 16/20)
Twenty characterization items (lithology, temperature, pore pressure, flow rate, strength, eElastic modulus, discontinuity, fracture toughness, creep rate, subcritical crack growth, specific heat, thermal conductivity, borehole diameter, natural gamma, heat production rate, in-situ stress, density, electric conductivity, wave velocity, and hydraulic conductivity) have been selected. Characterization techniques on fFourteen items have been established during previous research work. In this project, two characterization techniques, heat production rate and in-situ stress were established and we successfully attained the goal of the project. In addition, another THM characterization techniques were also developed and tested.
A heat production of subsurface rock originatesis from to the radioactive decay of radioactive isotopes in constituent minerals and thermal energy by gamma-ray emission, and its magnitude is dominated by the contents of the major radioactive isotopes (e.g., U, Th and K). Evaluation of the heat production is generally calculated based on a formula by Rybach (1986) using density of rock and contents of the major isotopes. Those contents to evaluate heat production of rock mass can be determined by mass-spectrometry using drill cores or rock fragments. In the deep borehole, however, it is not easily applicable because rock cores recovered from the depths of hundred meters down to a few km are rarely available. There is a borehole geophysical logging technique which can measure U, Th and K contents from gamma-ray spectrum. But it requires separate density measurements and the depth of equipment is also limited. As an alternative, Bucker and Rybach (1996) proposed a simple method to estimate the heat production from total gamma activity, relatively easily measurable, via normal gamma-ray logging tool. This technical report introduces development of heat production evaluation method for granitic rock mass with domestic commercialized borehole logging tools, as well as application and verification examples for a ~2 km deep borehole.
In Korea, the land is excavated every year to develop groundwater, drinking water, and hot springs. The depth of excavation is usually less than 100 m for household water, 200 to 300 m for factory water and drinking water that use a large capacity, and 1 km for hot springs to develop high water temperature. In this research stage, data were collected and analyzed for the deep hot spring boreholes drilled deeply in 2020-2021, . The hydraulic parameter and fracture characteristics were analyzed by the geothermal distribution of the deep boreholes.
The THM coupled characterization technique evaluates the thermal-hydraulic-mechanical properties and coupled mechanism of the deep rock using laboratory tests and numerical simulations that consider the high temperature and high pressure conditions of the deep subsurface. Thus, in this chapter, laboratory tests for determining the THM characteristic factor, which are important for evaluating the THM coupled behavior of deep rock, were reviewed and preliminary tests were performed. In addition, uniaxial compression tests were conducted on rock blocks at room temperature and high temperature conditions.
The time -dependent behavior of granite under different environmental condition was analyzed by mode-II subcritical crack growth test under dry and fully- saturated conditions. The stress corrosion index n was 15% lower under saturated condition compared to dry condition, which means water changed the characteristics of long-term behavior of rock. Discrete numerical models were developed and verified through comparison of numerical and laboratory test results and the numerical model was able to simulate the laboratory test well in quantitative (time to failure) and qualitative (fracture pattern) ways.
Rockburst is a sudden and violent failure of rock, possibly inducing not only injury to persons, but also damage to both underground workings and surface structures. In this stage of the study, the source mechanisms of rockburst were analyzed based mainly on the two investigation reports of the Canadian Rockburst Research Program (CRRP). A simplified LS-DYNA modelingmodelling was also performed to identify the tensile failure patterns occurring in the remaining rock mass right after blasting in mine stope. The configuration of the simplified model will probably be useful in small-scale model experiments for investigating the source mechanisms of rockburst.
Recently, characterizations of dynamic material properties and fracturing behaviors of rocks are worldwide recognized worldwide as an important issue in rock mechanics. But there have been few studies on experimental rock dynamics in Korea, which urged us to design and construct an SHPB (split Hopkinson pressure bar) test apparatus in KIGAM. The newly constructed SHPB apparatus constructed is designed for dynamic uniaxial compression test of rock specimen (maximum diameter of 35 mm) with axial confining pressure of up to 30 MPa.
Korea sStress mMap database was built by integrating stress data of 1,400 in-situ stress measurements using hydraulic fracturing and overcoring method and 100 earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or greater within the Korean Peninsula. Korea Stress Map displays A-D quality stress data records of the upper 25 km of the Earth’s crust from the Korea Stress Mapits own database and the World Stress Map database release 2016. All stress information is analyzed and compiled in a standardized format and quality-ranked for reliability and comparability on a global scale.
We have adopted PYTHON, a free open source, as a platform S/W for the development of 3D HF stress analysis code. In this year, we have constructed a theoretical algorithm of 3D HF stress analysis procedure and an optimization tool of a nonlinear least square technique.
A new indirect stress measurement method using drill core was introduced and investigated as a handy and simple measurement method, for the purpose of complementing conventional stress measurement such aslike hydraulic fracturing., as a handy and simple measurement method. The X-ray computed tomography technology was employed to obtain 3 dimensional shape of drill core and joint surface, followed by validation of stress measurement and roughness anisotropy analysis based on drill core images through sensitivity analysis with influentialce parameters. The comparison of estimated in situ stress was made between drill core based method and conventional hydraulic fracturing method. As a result, the new suggested method showed potential applicability as a stress indicator in terms of the stress orientation when it comes to making Korean Stress Map.
○ Development of deep subsurface characterization equipments
It was very hard for us to manufacture deep subsurface characterization equipments for previous intense R&D work was mainly focused on establishing characterization technology through introduction and application of imported equipments. Domestic manufacturing of equipments including the expansion of previous work have been planned and carried out after the accumulation of experience of previous research work. Three characterization equipments, 1.5 km in-situ stress measurement system (KHF15), 1.5 km 3D borehole deviation measurement system (K-DEV) and 1.0 km in-situ hydrulic characteristic measurement system (KHP10) were designed, manufactured and tested according to each development roadmap. The domestic manufacturing of deep subsurface characterization equipments have been challenging and limited, although the previous intense R&D works were successful on establishing the technology through introduction and application of imported equipments. In the current project, the domestic manufacturing of equipments including the expansion of previous work have been planed and carried out based on the accumulated experience of previous R&D works. Three deep subsurface characterization equipments such as 1.5 km in-situ stress measurement system (KHF15), 1.5 km 3D borehole deviation measurement system (K-DEV) and 1.0 km in-situ hydraulic characteristics measurement system (KHP10) were designed, manufactured and tested according to each development roadmap.
In KHF development, tThe on-off control of pressure-flow supply into a downhole test interval at the test depth, not at the surface, is required in hydro-fracturing especially at depth of km scale, and a new method and apparatus for controlling the on-off of pressure-flow supply directly at the top of the downhole test depth arewere designed and made. The developed apparatus was tested in the steel casing on the ground and passed the test, as for it operated well as we designed.
In K-DEV development, we aims to develop a borehole deviation survey tool down to 1.5 km for the steel-cased well as well as the open hole. The tool is to be compatible with the winch systems in KIGAM, operating in real-time and as accurate as commercial tools. In the first stage until 2021, we carried out formulation of the mathematical relationship, developing algorithm for data fusion and processing, selecting sensor elements, and manufacturing and testing a prototype. We have confirmed normal functioning of the prototype through test at a borehole in KIGAM. We have also verified its performance by applying it to a borehole in CNU down to 600 m depth and by checking the repeatability.
In KHP development, tThe final goal of this study is to develop a 1 km in-situ hydraulic characteristic measurement system (KHP). In the first year of the first stage, a basic conceptual design study of the KHP was conducted through hydraulic characteristic evaluation method and equipment literature research analysis, and determination of the appropriate capacity/sensor specification of the borehole in-situ hydraulic test equipment. In the second year, precise detailed design was carried out based on the basic concept design, and a standard method of constant pressure injection test suitable for possessing key parts and for domestic deep depth rock aquifers was proposed. In the second stage, it is planned to manufacture a system prototype based on the detailed design drawing and to improve the performance of the equipment and verify the validity of the standard test method by expanding the system field application. In the first year of the first stage, a basic conceptual design study of the KHP was conducted through a) literature research analysis on the method and equipment of in-situ hydraulic characteristics evaluation, and b)determination of the appropriate capacity and sensor specification for the borehole in-situ hydraulic test equipment. ○ Platform for simulating coupled THM behavior in discontinuous rock
The goal of this research module is to develop an outstanding THM coupled analysis platform through integration of OpenGeoSys and Itasca’s numerical simulation codes. Currently, the development of OGSFLAC for continuum and, OGS3DEC/ and OGS3PFC for discontinuum simulations arewere underway development. In addition, this platform includes integration of open-source pre- and post- processors for one-stop solution to THM coupled analysis of deep subsurface.
We developed a numerical model, OGS3DEC, for simulating the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical processes in discontinuous rock. As the first step, we developed a coupling algorithm to link two programs, OpenGeoSys for heat- and fluid -flow analysis and 3DEC for mechanical analysis, via a file-based sequential coupling scheme. Then, we simulated Terzaghi’s consolidation problem to verify the proposed coupling algorithm as a benchmark model. The numerical results showed good agreement with the analytical solutions.
The purpose of the OGSPFC development is to link the two codes to develop a technique that simulates the fracture behavior (crack generation, slip) of bedrock over time and the resulting change in hydraulic properties. In this stage, the cases of hydro-mechanical behavior analysis using PFC were reviewed and the coupling algorithm between PFC and CFD codes was established.
To establish a differentiation strategy of the OGSFLAC simulator being developed for analyzing coupled multiphysics processes in the ground, we investigated the technical trends and issues in coupled THM analysis. The results showed that a variety of coupled analysis approaches have been proposed depending on the multiphysics problem but there has been little attempt to standardize the modelingmodelling method. Therefore, verifying the validity of the OGSFLAC approach for various cases and proposing guidelines on numerical modelingmodelling are important for rapid dissemination of numerical modelling technology diffusion and for differentiating the OGSFLAC approach from other existing approaches. To apply the OGSFLAC simulator to coupled THM problems, we upgraded the functionalities of the initial OGSFLAC simulator (V1) which focused on coupled thermal-hydrological analysis.
As part of the DECOVALEX-2023 project Task G, wWe are developing a numerical model to simulate the thermo-hydro-mechanical processes within the crystalline rock fracture network. We suggested a numerical method to reproduce the mechanical, hydro-mechanical, and thermo-mechanical behavior of rock fracture using a grain-based distinct element model (GBDEM), and verified the method via benchmarks with analytical solutions. In benchmark modelingmodelling, a single fracture embedded in the rock was examined for the effects of fracture geometry, the boundary stress condition, the applied pressure, and the thermal loading condition. The simulation results showed that the developed numerical model reasonably reproduced the fracture slip and opening induced by thevarious factors.
