Ⅳ. Results of the Work
Considering the nature of the fault monitoring project site selection,, as evaluation items, large faults (Yangsan and Ulsan faults), earthquakes in the southeast region, quaternary faults, rock types, and GNSS location, were set. In determining the weights for the evaluation factors, the influence of each evaluation item (earthquake, fault, carcinoma, GNSS) is sufficiently reflected and it is necessary to adjust the weights between each evaluation factor to match. Therefore, different weights were applied to each evaluation factor for comparison and analysis, and finally, six observatories were selected with three regions (A, B, C) arranged in pairs based on the Yangsan and Ulsan faults, two major faults in the southeast region.
We carried out geological investigations (stratigraphic and structural observations) of each station (A1, A2, B1, C2) based on detailed field work and borehole logging of core samples. A1 and A2 stations are situated in the east and west of the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake epicenter, respectively. The borehole sample of A1 station consists of the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, whereas the borehole sample of A2 station is composed of the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and volcanic rocks. B1 station is located in the west of the Byeockgye section of Yangsan Fault, which is a well-known active part of the fault. The borehole sample of B1 is mostly composed of the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks. C2 station is located in the west of the valley of Ulsan Fault. The retrieved borehole sample is mainly composed of the Late Cretaceous biotite granite and some intermediate dikes.
In order to delineate the deep electrical resistivity distribution of the area including the Bakdal-ri (A2), Nogok-ri (A1), and Jene-ri (C2) stations, an airborne electromagnetic (AEM) survey, an electrical resistivity survey, and a magnetotelluric (MT) survey were performed and the data were interpreted. The low resistivity anomalies clearly shown in the inversion results of the AEM data are interpreted as the Moryang fault, the Deokcheon fault, and the Yangsan fault on the geological map. Low resistivity anomalies are founded in the inversion results of the DC resistivity data obtained from the 12 km lateral line. Some are interpreted as the Moryang fault, the Deokcheon fault, and the Yangsan fault, the others have the possibility of fault or fracture zones, but further investigation is necessary. The low resistivity anomalies appeared in the inversion results of the MT data acquired from the 12 km lateral line are estimated to be the Miryang fault, the Moryang fault, the Deokcheon/Yangsan fault, and the Ulsan Fault. The Deokcheon fault and Yangsan fault were not clearly distinguished due to the wide interval between the stations, and the Ulsan fault is interpreted as showing the characteristics of the thrust fault, which is dipping eastward from the surface to a depth of 1 km.
Various wireline loggings were performed, which include caliper, density, temperature, EC, natural gamma, spectral gamma ray logging, electrical resistivity, full waveform sonic, and acoustic televiewer logging for the survey boreholes drilled at a total of three candidate sites (A1, A2, and C2). The results were reflected in the design of large-diameter borehole for the installation of monitoring sensors in the future.
For site characterization, the initial stress of the local bedrock was measured using the hydraulic fracturing method in the investigation boreholes in four regions (A1, A2, B1, C2). The local stress pattern by region showed differences according to the topography (mountain, flatland, valley) and geology (crack zone, tectonic structure), and the horizontal stress magnitude and lateral pressure coefficient were relatively larger in region A-1 than in the other three regions.
A large-diameter monitoring borehole was drilled for the installation of a borehole sensor in consideration of the rock phase and adiabatic distribution state of the deep bedrock identified from detailed characterization by wireline logging of the investigation borehole and hydraulic fracturing test. The size of the large-diameter borehole was determined in consideration of the size and specifications of various borehole monitoring sensors installed for the purpose of various geophysical measurements, and a two-stage borehole diameter was introduced for stable drilling to the target depth.
A prebuilt monitoring sensor casings were installed at depths of about 500 m and 1,000 m of the large-diameter monitoring borehole, and various auxiliary materials were installed with paying attention to the location, direction, and work order. The decentralizers were used to prevent damage from collisions between sensor and auxiliary materials that are mounted to protrude in a specific direction from the outer wall of the casing, such as splicing sub, turnaround sub, temperature pressure sensor, and sensor cable and the borehole wall. In the section around the monitoring sensor casing, the corresponding directions were matched between several casings to prevent bending of the casing string and sensor cable.
Three optimal integrated geophysical monitoring systems were completed through deep monitoring hole and network design, and preliminary analysis was performed for constant monitoring. In the case of the deep seismometer, the utilization is increased through data quality control, and the detection ability of the event in the area around the borehole is confirmed through data analysis.
The pressure/temperature sensors installed on the outer wall of the casing at depths of about 500 m and 1,000 m in the A1 and A2 monitoring holes provide the fluid pressure and temperature in the ground constantly, although the signal contained some noise. As a result of reviewing PT sensor data with the rainfall and groundwater flow system data altogether, there found a change in pressure due to the seasonal cycle. A number of micro-earthquakes of magnitude 2 or less occurred near the monitoring hole before and after the PT sensor was installed. If the seismic source was very close to the monitoring hole, the earthquake could possibly sometimes affect the fluid pressure measured at a depth of 500 m.
For the purpose of monitoring long-term changes in strain/stress in the deep rock, FBG strain sensors are installed in the borehole to monitor the measurement results at all times. Various laboratory tests and numerical analysis were performed prior to on-site installation to confirm the reliability of sensor measurements. In the case of A1, A2, and C2 boreholes that have been installed and measured so far, it is assumed that they are in the stabilization stage. We intend to check the movement of the crust through long-term monitoring and use it in research of predicting the possibility of earthquakes.
It is possible to measure temperature information at least 0.5 m intervals for several tens of km with one optical fiber using the distributed temperature sensing (DTS) technique. For the three integrated geophysical monitoring systems, data were acquired and analyzed by installing a DTS to monitor the cement curing and measure the temperature change of the monitoring boreholes before and after the earthquake during the completion of the monitoring construction.
We have also developed a data format standardization software (conversion of various seismometer/ non-seismometer equipment data miniSEED) and dashboard software (efficient maintenance of remote seismometer/non-seismometer equipment) and integrated deep complex geophysics data through operation/optimization of development software and data server. The stability of the management system and the integrity of the data itself were secured.
Existing deep and shallow tectonic stress fields in the Korean peninsula were characterized through earthquake fault elevation data and hydraulic fracturing stress measurement data, and the cause was identified by deriving similarities and differences in stress fields according to stress identification methods and target depths. In addition, the evolution of the tectonic stress field over the Quaternary period and present life in the southeastern region of the Korean Peninsula was investigated, and the stability change of the Quaternary Fault was inferred under the changed stress field. The tectonic stress disturbance caused by brittle geological structures such as cracks/faults was analyzed by analyzing the characteristics of the compression fracture zone detected in the borehole in the southeastern region of the Korean Peninsula.
A hydraulic-mechanical linkage modeling technique using a three-dimensional particle binding model was developed and the developed code was verified by simulating the field experiment of fluid injection in the fault conducted at Mt. Terri URL. And we have created a fault geological model in the southeast region using a particle coupling model, and by devising a fault dynamic rupture model, finally developed a numerical analysis technique to predict the regional distribution of local stress changes due to an earthquake through a hypothetical earthquake occurrence scenario in the southeast region.
To evaluate the tomographic behavior, a scale model experiment using a biaxial compression device was performed. The fault reduction model experiment was performed on two models that considered the basic fault model and the fault model of the southeastern region of the Korean Peninsula. As a result of the test, the fracture stress conditions of each fault model were derived. In addition, the crack load and fracture load for each model were measured, and the stress conditions that induce failure of the fault according to various load conditions for the Yangsan/Ulsan fault, which are major faults in the southeastern region, were investigated.
