□ Purpose & Contents The ultimate goal of this research is to demonstrate fundamental Moon/Mars base construction technologies through NASA Centennial Challenge: 3D-Printed Habitat, Phase 3. The research aims to advance the technology of autonomous construction for building planetary habitats by developing (1) structural member material processing and extruder system using In-Situ resource utilization, (2) 3D printing technologies with gantry deployed to planetary surfaces, and (3) a virtual construction template for BIM based space Habitat design and 3d printing. NASA’s 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge is a Centennial Challenge Program competition that seeks to develop and demonstrate capabilities to manufacture, with 3D-printing technologies, a Habitat on another planetary body using mission recycled materials and/or local indigenous materials. The vision includes autonomous construction machines deployed to planetary surfaces to build shelters for human habitation. The challenge is divided into three phases: Phase 1 of the challenge, a design competition. Phase 2, structural member competition and Phase 3, on-site Habitat competition. This research project is an international cooperation study to participate in a NASA 3D-Printed Habitat, Phase 3 competition to demonstrate the fundamental construction technologies of the Moon and Mars bases. The Phase 3 competition is structured with three Construction Levels which lead to future construction of a full-scale Habitat. In addition to the three Construction Levels, the competition contains two Virtual Construction Levels to develop Habitat design and to encourage integration of BIM data with autonomous 3D printing processes. This research will promote and lead 3D printing construction technology by participating in 3D Printing Competition (Phase 3) held by NASA while implementing technologies through an international collaborative effort.
□ Results The key findings of this research project include (1) 3D printing machines with material processing and gantry attachment required for NASA competition, (2) interlock and software control technologies for gantry and extruder systems to autonomous addictive construction required for both space and Earth application, and (3) Habitat design and verification of constructability using gantry in space environment
□ Expected Contribution The technologies developed in this research project will serve to participate in Phase 3 of NASA's 3D Printing Competition in 2018-2019 in order to demonstrate capabilities and to lead the domestic & overseas space exploration mission. Autonomous additive construction methods using 3D printing technologies can also be applied to local construction site. As a result of this research, the additive construction processes that do not use water and cement are commercially available in areas where cement is either expensive or difficult to obtain locally, enabling ultra-low-low housing construction (4 persons residence, $ 12600 required), as well as reducing construction time and cost and resolving safety issues. It could realize high value added construction products by enabling the price to be lowered, the construction time to be reduced, and the rapid recovery to be enabled.
