□ Findings
1) Characteristics and cross-comparison of each panel’s experience of the ‘emerging adulthood’
∙ Perspectives on ‘becoming an adult’
From the area of ‘perspectives on becoming an adult,’ there exist a few aspects where it is difficult to say that those who are in high school(6th grade) are yet to be entered the ‘emerging adulthood’ period. The 6th graders’ perceptions of becoming an adult imply the aspects of the ‘emerging adulthood’ will be included in the future study. Among the different age groups, a tendency and continuity of ‘emerging adulthood’ can be seen from middle school panels(age between 21 and 22), alternative schools and out-of-school panels(age between 20 and 23), high school graduate panels(age between 24 and 28).
As Arnett defined the attribute of self-identity of late adolescents as “being neither adolescents nor adults, the age of feeling in-between,” each panel and each case varied across the spectrum. The perspective of self-awareness toward ‘becoming an adult’ was shown in an obvious form by college students and employed panels. Most of them were conscious of making life decisions that come with great responsibility and had specific thoughts about relationships and marriage. They also had some ideas about financial independence from parents and concerns about supporting their parents including humane understanding and recognition of their parents. Most of the panels, however, showed an ambivalent attitude of “feeling in-between” that they are “being neither adolescents nor adults.”
The researchers could learn that within the same panel group, depending on their backgrounds including their birth country and their journey to South Korea, forming a new family and adaptation, and resettlement and adjusting to academic life, not only varied the degree of their awareness of ‘becoming an adult’, but also changed the content.
∙ Financial Independence
The youths with North Korean backgrounds noticeably showed signs of already becoming financially independent even before they enter the ‘emerging adulthood.’ Behind such prematurity, there is another side of ‘forced subjectivity.’ Looking at the other side of their autonomous decision-making about their future life path, the range of possible choices or the objective constraints of the choices themselves exist like a double-sided coin. It shows that when it comes to choosing either to go to college or work after graduating from high school, they tend to choose the latter as soon as possible. This is because they have seen their parents struggling for money from early childhood, and the idea of not burdening their parents financially was formed from an early stage.
∙ Changes and expansion of social relationships and gender issues
The scope of social context and relationships vary depending on whether or not they finished high school and whether they found a job or not. In the case of those who are in high school(6th grade), without much meaningful change in social relationships, their social relationships are limited to their family(parents living together, siblings) and friends from school. This is because most 6th graders’ daily life occurs within their family and school without getting out of the ‘microscopic world’ and the ‘middle earth.’ Most of the 6th grade panels experience changes in the existing friendships as they go on to high school. Going to high school allows them to move away from their old place to a new one and make new friends. Leaving from one place to another and forming a new relationship carries great meaning, especially for youths with North Korean backgrounds.
In the case of the three panels graduated from high school, beyond the ‘microscopic world’ that consists of family and peer groups, the scope of social relationships is expanded including (1) changes in family relationships, (2) dating relationships(marriage preparation), and social dimensions(college life, local community, and the labor market). In terms of the expansion of social relations and self-reliance, one of the developmental tasks is redefining one’s role and status through marriage and in the form of a new family rather than defining oneself as a child. In such respect, in relation to gender issues, differences in experiences and perceptions between genders can be found. Female panels tend to see that they are not free from facing any kind of risks when it comes to dating and marriage based on their observation and experience in their parents’ marriage and parent-child relationships. When several family histories and scars(trauma) caused by relationships due to North Korean background were added, they strongly expressed that they would postpone dating and marriage(including childbirth).
∙ Exploration and experience of career path
In relation to career/employment plan and preparation, most panels’ top priority is to earn financial security through a stable job within the fastest time rather than achieving self-realization. Among the college-enrolled panels, most of them chose to study practical and applied fields or expected or tried to enter the labor market as soon as possible by earning additional certificates. In the case of middle school, alternative school, and out-of-school panels, there were cases where they chose to work by taking a leave of absence or work-study at the same time. Though those who work do not have any specific complaints to make, they plan to switch their work mostly for better wages and living expenses. Most youths with North Korean backgrounds tend to explore and prepare for employment based on the salary. Further research should be done to examine how such career exploration and preparation strategies influence their social mobility and class and status acquisition later on.
∙ The impact of COVID-19 on career exploration and preparation
The college-enrolled group reveals the inequality of social disaster brought by the COVID-19 outbreak visibly and directly. More than half of 6th grade panels regarded the COVID-19 outbreak as insignificant or heavily mentioned in their life experiences over the past one or two years. Even to the employed panel, the COVID-19 outbreak was not significant. In the case of college students who were out of systematic protection called ‘school fences’(substitute teachers), the COVID-19 outbreak had a negative impact in several ways including academic adaptation, learning process, and forming social relationships. It further led to academic maladjustment and a decrease in academic self-esteem when schools reopened and face-to-face classes began.
Some of the 6th grade and middle school panels said that they preferred not having to school which implies that rather than the quality of learning, they enjoyed being ‘free from teacher’s control’ by ‘not going to school’ and ‘being able to do something else’ during online classes. A such result is consistent with Yang et al(2021:244)’s findings that youths with immigrant backgrounds are more likely to agree to online classes than those with non-immigrant backgrounds. Subjective preference for online non-face-to-face classes concerns that it is more likely to result in ‘unequal impact of natural disaster’ such as learning deficits and deepening learning gaps. The COVID-19 outbreak had a negative impact on college students including their academic achievement as well as expectations for college life and having a sense of belonging to the school and meeting new friends, which all resulted in a decrease in academic self-esteem, inferiority feelings, depressive disorder, and leave of absence. In the case of alternative school and out-of-school panels who entered the labor market early on, the COVID-19 pandemic left a considerable aftermath in terms of work and livelihood. Those who have 2D jobs had to change their jobs frequently due to the economic crisis and business restrictions caused by COVID-19.
2) Comprehensive analysis and implications
The ‘emerging adulthood’ of youths with North Korean backgrounds is more than a developmental task of adolescence, it is a matter of socio-cultural component. To the youths with North Korean backgrounds, the specific experience in the world of ‘emerging adulthood,’ under the socio-cultural background and subjective and objective conditions arising from the ‘North Korean background,’ is the result of efforts made by those who aimed for educational growth and social integration as well as it is a social component constrained by objective conditions. According to the analysis, the government’s policy support acted as a significant variable in the process of the ‘emerging adulthood’ for the youths with North Korean backgrounds. Depending on changes in the policy support for the youths with North Korean backgrounds, their academic growth, and social integration could develop positively, which implies a possible change for the better.
