Purpose of Project
The project aims to restore Korea’s native fleshy shrimp as aquaculture species and to diversify varieties of farmed olive flounder and stabilize the fish production through the improvement of early life survival by utilizing the biofloc farming technique (BFT). It also intends to expand the shrimp farming on land through the fundamental research on low-salinity biofloc shrimp farming to overcome the climate change impact.
Outcome of Project
The project established strategies to improve the growth and survival rate of fleshy shrimp, a native species inhabiting small areas along the west coast of Korea, through growing tests which applied various conditions of feed, stocking density and tank type. It also developed the technology for whole cycle shrimp farming by producing the first generation of seeds from farmed broodstock.
The project also developed BFT nursery technology for olive flounder, which increased 30~40% of the fish survival rate. The improvement raised the farm productivity and cut the exchange rate of culture water by one third reducing energy consumption as well as carbon emissions.
Our research on characterization of beneficial microorganisms originating from biofloc and tidal flat identified conditions for the activation and established the technique for mass culture and preservation of microorganisms.
Lastly, the project developed the elementary technology for low-salinity biofloc and presented basic criteria for safe reuse of culture water. The rearing tests with application of different low-salinity biofloc compositions suggested a possibility of using artificial sea salt at shrimp farms.
Application plan and expected effect of project’s outcome
The technology for whole cycle aquaculture of fleshy shrimp developed by the project will ease the instability in Korea’s shrimp farming industry that relies on the single species of white leg shrimp, diversity the varieties of farmed shrimp species and secure the seed sovereignty. The project suggests a possibility of restoring fleshy shrimp as aquaculture species through early seed production and test growing at farms. Bioremediation using seaweed controls nitrate concentrations. It was shown that a nitrate concentration that is 25% lower than the olive flounder biofloc nursery and seawater affects animal survival. It is considered that this system can also be applied at the low-salinity biofloc farmng system of white leg shrimp. The technology development for separation, preservation and mass cultivation of beneficial microorganisms is expected to open a new possibility for refinement and commercialization of functional microorganisms. The future commercialization of the technology will enhance the convenience and a wider distribution of the biofloc application at farms.
With the success of low-salinity biofloc shrimp farming using artificial sea salt that costs one third cheaper than natural seawater, it is expected that shrimp farming activities will prosper overcoming temporal and spatial constraints; shrimp production at short distance from the market will not only reduce the carbon footprint but also improve farmers’ income.
