The hydrodealkylation reaction of ethylbenzene and mixture of alkylbenzene containing ethylbenzene over nickel-tungsten catalysts supported on silica-alumna was investigated by using flow reactor operated at 10 atm. Tungsten supported catalyst reduced under hydrogen flow of 10 atm at 873 K showed catalytic activity. The conversion of ethylbenzene was significantly increased on nickel-tungsten supported catalysts. Hydrocracked methane was a major product on nickel only supported catalyst. The selectivity to benzene was largely enhanced with cosupporting tungsten. The effect of tungeten supported with nickel was explained in terms of control of hydrogenation ability through electronic interaction between supported nickel and tungsten from the experimental results at various reaction temperatures, pressures, the amounts of tungsten loading, and reaction time. The product distribution on nickel-tungsten supported catalysts with various reduction treatments such as hydrogen pressures, temperatures, and reduction times was examined. On the catalyst reduced slightly, hydrocracked methane was produced predominantly and on the catalyst reduced severely, the selectivity to toluene was high. On the catalyst reduced in the middle of above conditions e. g. under hydrogen flow of 10 atm at 873 K for 3 hr, the selectivity to benzene was the highest. The effect of reduction treatment on the product distibution could be explained in terms of the reduced state of tungsten. The mixture effect was observed in hydrodealkylation reaction of alkylbenzene mixture. The conversion of alkylbenzene having weak interaction with catalyst was largely decreased when it was mixed with other alkylbenzene having strong interaction. Reactivity order of alkylbenzene in hydrodealkylation over nickel-tungsten supported catalyst was mesitylene> ethylbenzene> m-xylene. Selectivity to hydrocracked methane was very high in the reaction of nesitylene comparing to the reaction of ethylbenzene.
