Changes in educational methods have brought about the necessity for new concepts in the way in which schools are constructed. Although several schools with practical open space have been recently built, the general public's knowledge and understanding about their purpose lacking. This study is to understand and examine usages of new open space in elementary schools based on theories of previous studies. The research has been conducted in four groups of elementary schools, and the results are as follows: First, though study space per one person was varied from 1.64㎡(G1) to 6.14㎡(G4), the percentage of equipment space was 30∼40% regardless of the number of students and the establishment of open space. Judging from the above, G4 schools with a small number of students seemed to have had more diverse study equipment. However, G1 schools which use hallways as study space were with less study equipments. Therefore, a more active means to obtain open space is necessary rather than using limited space such as hallways. Second, survey results show that most people prefer open spaces located parallel to each classrooms(25.45%) or in independent locations(23.03%). It was found that in the case of parallel placements of open spaces, people were more satisfied with enclosed spaces rather than open ones because of the level of noise. With respect to those who use open spaces, the majority(35.30%) preferred 2 classes, followed by 1 grade(25.88%). And 56.29% responded that open space should be "a place in a convenient location with study elements for individual and personal education". From these results, we can judge that priority should be given to a plan for establishing such characteristics of open spaces. Thirdly, according to the results found in a study on behavioral study habits in open spaces, activities such as playing during free time and conducting audio-visual classes were observed. In the mid-to-high grades, some open spaces were divided and being used as normal classrooms. Also, spaces adjacent to each classrooms were more frequently used than open space assigned to the grade. It has been found that a more precise analysis on the size and location of open spaces is necessary. It is important to create open spaces that can be used for diverse, individual and personal education. Obtaining these spaces is necessary not only for new school plans but also for the renovation of old schools. Especially, regulations concerning the size, location and shape of the rooms should be established in the near future.
