This study aims at finding out how much stress the mental patients' families have and how to cope with the stress. For this, the stress of inpatients families was compared with that of outpatients' families to expand the understanding of stress. The result will help the families cope with the stress effectively. In this study, 116 people of inpatients' and outpatients' families from two general hospitals, one neuro-psychiatry, and one psychiatry of Chonnam area were examined. Questionnaires were distributed to the families. For the members who can not fill forms of questionnaires, nurses and social workers were asked to help them to fill out the form. The period of data collecting was from April 22nd through May 15th, 2000. The percentage and frequency were found through SPSS statistics. Analysis of correlation, descriptive analysis and T-test were used. Stress measuring instruments developed by Shila Pai and Kapur were used. As an instrument to evaluate how to cope with stress, reliable and valid questionnaires developed by Jalowice were used. The results are as followes ; First, the average stress of the mental patients' families is 3.27. The stress are related to stress factors, such as emotional problems (3.49), social problems (3.29), physical problems (2.90) and economic problems (2.83). The problems include "worry about patients' future(4.17)" and "lack of social agencies that help the families in communities (3.94)" Second, a significant difference was shown between the stress and stress factors according to demographic and social characteristics of the mental patients' families. The stress factors are related to age, education, monthly income, period of illness. Third, it is shown that families try to cope the stress in problem-oriented way rather then emotion-oriented way. They also try another coping mechanism such as "making an effort to see a bright side" and "making a positive effort to change the situation" Fourth, in the stress and the stress coping of mental patients' families, the less stress the families have, the less positive attitude such as an emotion-oriented coping they show. If the stress is mitigated or not according to the presence of counsellors was not confirmed, as shown in previous studies. Fifth, the stress of families of inpatients and outpatients was compared. No significant difference was found in stress related to four factors of physical, emotional, economic, and social problems. It is demonstrated that the mental patients' families have high level of stress related to an emotional problem of patients' future. They use a problem-oriented way to cope with stress. When they do not have appropriate help from society in a process to deal with their problems, they have more stress. It is shown that when they have more stress, they use less reasonable ways to deal with problems. It was thought that outpatients' families have more stress than inpatients' families, but it is shown that only the fact that there is the mental patient as a member of families works as a factor of stress. Based on those results ; several suggestions to help the mental patients' families are as follows ; First, training programs, support groups and counselling are needed for the mental patients' families to mitigate their difficulties and stress. Second, to overcome indignity from their society due to perception of being a mental patient, organized supportive systems for social adjustment and job opportunities should be established. Third, Education and social enlightening activities shoued be given to communities to overcome stigma for the mental patients and their families.
