This prospective, controlled, comparative study was performed to assess the satisfaction of mothers who were educated in the care of newborns. Fifty-two mothers (verbal education group) were educated by verbally and forty-seven mothers (video education group) were educated by video. The knowledge and understanding of newborn care and the degree of maternal satisfaction were assessed before and after the education. The opinions of the 11 nurses who were involved in the education were also incorporated into the study. With respect to the amount of learning achieved, the results were the same in the groups, but the verbal education group was more satisfied with the discharge preparation than the video education group. 93.6 percent of the video education group indicated they would revisit the same hospital for delivery while 76.9 percent of the verbal education group was interestd in a second visit. Regression analysis of the video education group revealed a strong correlation between the score of understanding and satisfaction with the discharge preparation (r=0.409, p=0.005), and between the satisfaction scores for discharge preparation and discharge education (r=0.844, p=0.000). In the verbal education group, the score of newborn care knowledge correlated with the score of newborn care understanding. (r=0.318, p=0.021), and the score of satisfaction with the discharge preparation correlated with both the score of satisfaction with the discharge education(r=0.680, p=0.000) and the score of intention to revisit(r=0.287, p=0.039). A subgroup analysis showed that the multigravida mother of the video education group had a higher score in knowledge and understanding of newborn care while the multigravida mother of the verbal education group had a higher satisfaction score. Among the mothers with a higher educational background, the verbal education group scored higher than the video education group in the satisfaction with discharge preparation Of the mothers who delivered a male baby, the verbal education group also was more satisfied with discharge preparation than the video education group. In conclusion, this study showed that the discharge education to mothers regarding newborn care via video does not improve the understanding or satisfaction of the mothers. However, the response to the mode of discharge education depended on the characteristic of the mothers. I suggested that the characteristics of the mother should be considered in order to improve the understanding and knowledge of newborn care when the mode of discharge education is chosen.
