The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the effects of phonics method on develop the ability of phoneme discrimination, and of memorizing words. In the current English curriculum, grade three students are to be exposed only to spoken English. It has been emphasized that teaching English is an Elementary should focus on improving English communicative ability and so only spoken English should be used in third grade English classes. There are mainly two reasons for this curriculum. All children learn spoken language first before the written language. Likewise, Korean learners of English should follow the same pattern to learn English. Second, third grade students might feel burdened and so lose interest in studying English at the beginning stages if they start to learn spoken English and written English simultaneously. But this method does not make children discriminate phonemes correctly. Also, this could not be the case if we consider the average Korean learner's age, cognitive ability and other learning conditions. They already have almost perfect knowledge of the Korean language and have great curiosity to know both written English and spoken English. These peculiar factors related to students learning English as a second language imply that they need spoken and written English for effective language learning at the beginning stages. For this purpose, the background of phonics theory, the relation between sounds and spelling of English, and the property of teaching English spelling by phonics method in elementary school students, especially third graders for English learning were discussed. Phonics provides great help in learning good pronunciation developing basic communication ability and showing positive attitudes and interest in English. So it enables learners to discriminate phonemes correctly and to learn and memorize words easily, since it causes them to think of the relationship between sounds and letters instead of memorizing spelling meaninglessly and mechanically. Whether third grade students can effectively learn English as a second language with spoken English only, or with both spoken and written language using phonics method is very controversial. To verify the educational effect of phonics method, I have made an experimental study under which I selected seventy students of grade three of elementary school and divided two groups as the experimental group and selected other students of the same grade as the control group. From the results of this experiment we found that the experimental group obtained better results on tests of phoneme discrimination. But we did not found the meaning difference in memory tests of words in English between the two groups. But if we had had longer experimental period, we would have had more differences between the two groups. And the subjects of the experimental group not only participated in classes during the experimental period but steadily gained interest in studying English that they did not lose interest or feel any difficulty because of the use of written English. In conclusion, it can be said that third grade elementary school students can learn English more effectively when they are exposed to written English as well as spoken English with the phonics method.
