The purpose of this thesis is to describe glottalization in modern Korean more systematically. Glottalization is a single phenomenon, but we can't explain it by one principle. In other words, we need to consider phonological, morphological, semantic, social and psychological conditions. So far, we've seen this phenomenon. The conclusion is as follows. First, it occurs when the final sound of first syllable is plosive. This phenomenon occurs in phonological condition. And it totally depends on the final sound of first syllable. But it doesn't occur when the final sound of first syllable is voiced consonant. Second, in 「substantive + postposition」 and 「stem + ending」, we need to consider both phonological and morphological condition. In phonological condition, it occurs when the final sound of first syllable is plosive. But in morphological condition, there is a difference. Third, in case of compound word, it occurs selectively in subordinate compound word. We need to investigate this both morphological and semantic condition. In other words, the phenomenon may be divided into two branches ; one is to take place glottalization, the other isn't. And even though words are combined in glottalization, but it doesn't occur in some words. Thus, in case of this, we should see component parts of words. As a result, it doesn't occur when the previous component represents materials, animate nouns, shapes, and properties. Fourth, a derivative is classfied into prefixal derivation and suffixal derivation in order to explain glottalization. As a result, it doesn't occur in case of derivative. Finally, word-initial glottalization generally occurs in proper word. And word-initial glottalization has two functions ; one is to emphasize, the other is to distinguish. When it functions as emphasis, it emphasizes a general meaning and a negative meaning. On the other hand, when it functions as distinction, it makes new meanings and solves ambiguity of homonym. As mentioned above, there are various ways to explain glottalization in modern Korean. Nevertheless, it seems to be difficult to regularize it. It's true that glottalization has some rules and tendencies. But, we haven't found a basis to systematize it so far. Therefore, we need much more investigations to systematize glottalization. That's the question!
