Psycho-social Characteristics of the Computer Game-addicted Adolescents : A study for identifying those who call for psychological intervention원문보기

The present study intended first to investigate the psycho-social characteristics of adolescents who use computer games addictively. Second, it intended to identify the students who call for psychological intervention from those who are temporarily addicted. Questionnaire was administered to adolescents attending local middle and high schools twice in 3-month interval. Initially, there were 834 students of both sexes who experienced computer games to a variety degree. They were classified into three groups by a test modeled after Young(1998a)'s Internet Addiction Test: the addicted group, the semi-addicted group, and the non-addicted group. Three months after the first questionnaire, the participants were invited through an email to participate in the second part of the study. By clicking a button, they were led to an homepage for questionnaire. 198 students participated in session 2. The subjects who were addicted or semi-addicted initially but became non-addicted in session 2 were classified into the temporarily addicted group. And the subjects who were addicted and semi-addicted initially and remained so or became more addicted were classified into the continuously addicted group. Following results were obtained: First, the addicted and the semi-addicted groups experienced significantly more life stress events for the last six months and more loneliness than the non-addicted group. The former two groups-also had less trust in relationship with their parents and less interests or fun in their daily activities except computer games than did the non-addicted group. Second, the temporarily addicted group had more interests or fun in their daily activities than did the continuously addicted group. The current study found that adolescents who experience many life stress events and much loneliness and have little trust in parents are inclined to get addicted to computer games. However, if they have interests or fun in any other daily physical activities, they seem to have better opportunity to escape from game addiction in some time.
