This year celebrates the Centennial of Sowol (pen name of Jeong-Shik Kim), one of the representatives of Korean modern poetry, who was born in 1902. This thesis aims at adding to the interest in and love towards him and his poems by analyzing the images of Nature reflected in his works. The 1920s was a period when the waves of Western literary thoughts continued to land on the shore of Korean literary circles. During this period, most of Korean poets moved into writing romantic poems, but he kept on writing traditional ones using traditional materials, rhymes and themes. In his poems appear diverse images of nature including water, fire, birds, flowers, grass, trees, sea and roads. Through these images he expressed many emotions like the sorrow of parting, the longing for hometown, the hope for returning there and the pain caused by the loss of a lover and not being able to be with the lover. This thesis focused on: first, analyzing the prototypic symbols and images of Nature in his poems; and then, studying what they meant in his poems. First, the symbols of water and fire have the images of both creation and distinction, respectively, but water contains the images of parting and the sorrow of loss, and fire possesses those of love and the attainment of desire. In his poems water represents the emotional meanings of the sorrow of parting and the longing for hometown; while fire appears as an image of dynamic love and desire. Fire, however, cannot attain love or achieve what it desires, purifies the speaker's solitude and sadness and contains the image of innocence. Second, the prototypic symbols of birds and flowers represent departure and settlement. Birds have the images of freedom, truth and innocence, while flowers contain the images of life, hope and beauty. In the poems of Sowol, birds symbolize the yearning for returning to hometown and freedom, restless feelings of the speaker, nihilistic thoughts of an intellectual living under the Japanese colonial ruling and deep sorrows. They also evoke the images of sorrow and longing due to the loss of his lover. Flowers stands for the speaker's love, his sorrow faced with parting, beauty and his hope for settling down with his lover. Third, the prototypic symbols of grass, sea and roads are as follows: Grass involves the contradictory images of jubilant life and vanity. It represents softness and fragility, but sometimes symbolizes the grassroots showing tenacious life force. Trees express high-minded fidelity, but sometimes stand for spiritual energy or strong life force. Sea contains the image of water, but symbolizes paramita and eternity unlike water. It also symbolizes death. Roads are a media linking the heaven and the earth. In modern times roads symbolize truth, teachings, wandering and alienation. In Sowol's poems grass has the images of hope and life. Sowol regains his hope through the image of grass overcoming his sorrow due to his parting with his love. Trees in his poems symbolize himself; the striving of his lyric self for self-realization is depicted in them. The sea in his poems represents the world of paramita sought by the speaker in the poems. Sowol, however, gave shape to the sea as a world of paramita where he wants to reach but cannot do so. Roads in Sowol's poems contain the image of life-long wandering. They represent difficulties, hardships, wandering and alienation. Fourth, Sowol recognized the images of nature as follows: Rather than attaching new images to the things in Nature, he provided his readers with the images of nature appearing in myths or folk tales, thus assimilating them into his poems and familiarizing his readers with them. As a result, his poems should be newly interpreted. He transformed the images of natural objects from external materials to internal ones. Unlike other poets in the 1920s, he maximized the effect produced by the form of poems by writing them based upon the external materials, which consist of natural objects appearing in Korean myths and folk tales. In conclusion, this thesis summarized prototypic symbols of natural images and their images in Sowol's poems. The images of water, fire, birds, flowers, grass, trees, sea, roads are put together to sublimate the sorrow of living in a world without his sweetheart into beauty.
