The purpose of this research is to find out the measurement ability of children at the ages of three, four, and five, and to examine the difference of children's measurement ability by measurement areas. The questions of this research were as follows: 1. Are there any differences in the children's measurement ability(selection ability of nonstandard units and measurement skills) according to the ages? 1-1. Are there any differences in the children's measurement ability of length according to the ages? 1-2. Are there any differences in the children's measurement ability of area according to the ages? 1-3. Are there any differences in the children's measurement ability of volume according to the ages? 1-4. Are there any differences in the children's measurement ability of weight according to the ages? 2. Are there any differences in the measurement ability of children according to the measurement areas(length, area, volume, and weight)? 2-1. Are there any differences in the measurement ability of three-year-old children according to the measurement areas? 2-2. Are there any differences in the measurement ability of four-year-old children according to the measurement areas? 2-3. Are there any differences in the measurement ability of five-year-old children according to the measurement areas? The sample of research consisted of 50 children at the age of three, 50 children at the age of four, and 50 children at the age of five. They were selected from 4 classes of three years old, 2 classes of four years old, and 2 classes of five years old in two kindergartens located at Seoul, Korea. I tested individual child's measurement ability of length, area, volume, and weight by applying Charlesworth(1996)'s development stage of measurement concept. To examine the difference of children's measurement ability by the ages of children or measurement areas, I completed one-way ANOVA by examining the selection ability of nonstandard unit in three-point scale. I also classified the measurement skills into four categories based on success or failure of comparison and measurement using nonstandard units. After classifying the sample, I calculated the frequency and percentage of each categories and employed the χ²-test for the analysis of measurement skills. The results of this research are as follows.: First, the selection ability of nonstandard units of length, area, volume, and weight showed significant difference between the ages(length; p<.01, area, volume, weight; p<.001). The selection ability of nonstandard units of three year old children were lowest and five-year-old children were highest. Most children at the ages of four and five were able to select appropriate nonstandard units. The measurement skills of length, area, volume, and weight also showed significant difference between the ages(p<.001). Children start to develop their comparison skills and measurement skills using nonstandard unit when they are three years old. And four-year-old children dramatically develop measurement skills using nonstandard unit. Most children at the ages of four and five are able to perform comparison and measurement using nonstandard unit accurately. This result shows that the measurement ability of older children were higher than that of younger children. Second, the selection ability of nonstandard unit of the children at the ages of three, four, and five showed significant difference between measurement areas(3-year-old; p<.001, 4-year-old, 5-year-old; p<.01). The selection ability of nonstandard unit were highest in the order of length, weight, volume, and area. The measurement skills of the children at the age of three, four, and five also showed significant difference between measurement areas(p<.001). The measurement skills of the children at the age of three, four, and five were highest in measuring length. The measurement skills were lowest when comparing volume and when measuring area with nonstandard unit. The research result of measurement skill using nonstandard unit was in accord with that of the selection ability of nonstandard unit.
