This study examined whether to make a confession about a painful experience through writing would have beneficial effects, and if it did, what mechanisms would produce such effects. Each of fifty-six undergraduates wrote about one of their painful experience three times, in 2-3day interval, in 20 minutes at each time. To find the results of three times' confession, subjective physical symptoms, impact of the event, positive/negative affect of the event and self-perception were repeatedly measured. Four psychological mechanisms - mechanism of confrontation, catharsis, distancing, and understanding - were proposed in detail on the base of previous studies. And each of four trained judges rated the uses of the four mechanisms which were reflected in the participants' each essay. Results showed that writing about a painful experience improved subjective physical symptoms, and reduced impact of the event. It was also found that positive affect of the event was increased, while negative affect was reduced. In most cases the mechanism of confrontation was most frequently used, it could indicate that the mechanism of confrontation is very essential in confession. While the uses of confrontation and catharsis were related to increasing positive affect, those of distancing and understanding were important mechanisms that reduced impact of the event. Contrary to expectation, only mechanism of confrontation could explain significantly the improving of subjective physical symptoms. Implications for the findings for counseling and psychotherapy, limitations of this study and suggestions future studies were discussed.
