Since the infants are constantly affected and stimulated by physical environment and the influence of the environment in learning experience are absolute, that of the environment of the well-equipped infant education facility becomes an very important factor in determining the quality of infant education. It is a kindergarten which is responsible for these educational environments and especially, indoor learning & playing spaces of education process center is the place where the infants develop their ability through learning and play. Therefore we must listen to the teacher who performs education program and instructs them, and indoor learning & playing spaces must be adapted to education program contents considering the infants' character. Recently, many infant educational institutions in Korea have been applying and introducing constructivist education. Because the infants participate in it and construct the informations actively by means of an original learning process, and consequently, many reports are come out, containing that it is effective for them to improve their capacity and accomplish their studies in it. constructivist education is different from an infant education program which is based on an infant improvement theory in the view of the purpose and manner in performing an educational progress. As a result, it is essential that we set up an physical environment which is different from other educational environment and performs an educational action effectively. While many people are engaged in research of educational contents, educational environments for studies rarely exist and some researches are not being performed about the directions and instructions of plans in preparing an educational environment. This research has the purpose of suggesting basic materials for constructing educational environments of indoor learning & playing spaces for a constructivist education. In constructing these environments we must follow some procedures. First, consider constructional principles of a constructivist education and an educational environment. Second, understand the conditions of indoor learning & playing spaces in Ulsan and analyze problems and improvement directions. Third, listen to the teachers. Fourth, establish and design the directions and standards of physical environments plans. To investigate the educational character of the kindergartens I made an interview by the telephone with the director and the head teacher of 116 private kindergartens from 5th August, 2002 to 7th August 2002. To analyze the conditions of indoor learning & playing spaces I made a on-the-spot survey of 2 wholly-applying constructivist education kindergartens and other 2 partially-applying constructivist education ones. Also, to investigate the actual using condition of indoor learning & playing spaces, physical environments and the teachers' awareness about the characters of an constructionism and their opinion I made a questionnaire survey of 150 wholly-applying constructivist education kindergartens' teachers and other 150 partially-applying constructivist education kindergartens' ones from 17th September, 2002 to 27th September, 2002. Except for insufficient 15 copies, the 224 copies of a questionnaire 239 were dealt with by fulfilling frequency, percent, average, standard deviation and independent-samples t-test by means of SPSS Following are the results of this research. 1. Representative educational programs of Ulsan private kindergartens are composed of Montessori Programm, ICBA and constructivist Program, but most of the kindergartens were applying constructivist education to the curriculum partially and using Project Approach as an educational program. 2. Through an on-the-spot survey, of kindergartens analyzed by examples, physical environments of some kindergartens which apply constructivist education partially, compared with other kindergartens which apply one in whole educational areas, produce less problem and are adapted to an educational environment. 3. Compared with kindergartens who apply constructivist education partially, kindergartens teachers who apply constructivist education in whole education areas remarked that education areas for social, expression and search was very high in educational effects. 4. In educational spots, of interest centers for free choice activity of the infants, the equipment and the use frequency of indoor sand play area, indoor water play area, cooking area, props for dramatic play area were extremely low in other areas. And sofas, partitions and indoor sand play box were low in having and important degrees of furnitures and equipments. 5. The satisfaction degrees of kindergartens teachers about indoor learning & playing spaces, physical environments was high. They preferred these design factors like this. For example, Traffic line is 'ㄷ‘type, Area division instruments are storage funiture, Desks are the mingling, The furnitures forms is geometrical and organic ones, furniture materials are timbers, Wall coverings are wallpaper and wood, Floorings are linoleum, wood, carpet in order. They preferred pastel color and natural images as whole color and images indoor learning &playing spaces. 6. The fundamental directions this research suggested of indoor designs about learning and playing spaces are organic, effective, rational, practical, diverse and original ones. I will suggest dividing the designs into 10 areas. The designs runs as follows : Reading area(reading, writing, listening, multimedia), mathematics & science areas, art & craft areas, block play & manipulative areas, group play & motor activities areas, music nook area, props for dramatic play area(able to divert water & sand areas). I arranged and constructed spaces dispersedly, giving much more weight on language area, mathematics& science areas, art & craft areas and then centering group play & motor activities areas. And I planned to select wall coverings, floorings and color on a standard of the teachers' favorite design factors. On a basis of the above results this study runs as follows : 1. The indoor learning & playing spaces, physical environments of the kindergartens must accord with educational programs ends and educational contents. But compared with other kindergartens which apply a constructivist education in whole educational areas, the physical environments of some kindergartens which apply a constructivist education partially produce less problem and are adapted to an educational environment. Because the representative programs of each kindergarten, which have been used in educational spots for a very long time, had already constructed educational environments that could elevate the educational effects of each educational program (These programs must have the constructivist principles and directions of physical environments) and had applied existing environments in constructivist education. On the contrary, in Korea, the kindergartens which apply constructivist educational program that is very new to our kindergartens to whole areas construct environments without the systematic and concrete directions for indoor learning & playing spaces, physical environments and performs education. Consequently, much troubles occur and these environments without the directions have the slight adaptability. So I think we must improve the problems of existing spaces and prepare systematic and concrete physical environments directions that can support educational programs in accordance with the ends and contents of constructivist education. 2. The kindergartens who apply constructivist education in whole education areas said that education areas for social, expression and search was very high in educational effects. This means that constructivist education characters concentrate on an interaction between the infants, originality, activity and autonomy and In interest center meaningful education areas for social, expression and search are carried out and this interest center includes reading, writing, listening, art & craft, music, group play, science and mathematics. These various parts of interest center must be considered first in the size and arrangement plan of areas when we decide to design indoor learning & playing spaces for constructivist education. 3. This interest center was extremely low in equipment and use frequency in comparison with other areas. In consequence we must change this interest center into open, flexible environments that can exalt the effects of constructivist education by pushing it into outdoor learning and playing spaces or consolidating one educational area into similar interest center and using it variably and then assuring area of spaces. Also, we must substitute other similarly functional for the furnitures having low importance and plan to design changeable furnitures and place them according to educational activities. 4. The educational environments suitability of physical environments became higher than expected. Because under the educational experiences and plans of the teachers, the infants are leaded and educated well, despite the best physical environments aren't substantially constructed in accordance with educational contents and ends. 5. Because the design factor preference of the teachers was the reply about the elements for effective education on a basis of experiences that the teachers got in education spots with many infants, performing education we ought to receive their opinion as well as have the constructivist principles and guides in mind in planning indoor elements when we design learning and playing spaces for constructivist education. 6. The learning and playing spaces designs for constructivist education this research suggested analyze the physical environmental conditions of kindergartens, which now are carrying out constructivist education, and recognized problems and improvement courses and approached more detailedly and scientifically in suggesting the directions of plans and concrete design styles according to synthesizing and proposing the teachers' thought and so all things from the above are worthwhile, and may be the guides in constructing and planning physical environments of indoor learning and playing spaces for constructivist education. This research had the purpose of suggesting basic materials for physical materials of indoor learning and playing spaces for infant's education but it has the limitation of having surveyed only Ulsan private kindergartens, and the incumbent teachers. Therefore it is required that we collect much materials for generalization. Accordingly I feel that we must compare on-the-spot survey examples more exactly and examine detailed differences and design factors about constructivist each program, and design physical environments. And on the questionnaire survey of this research the teachers was only considered but satisfaction and preference have to be considered in view of the infants. Hence, surely we should invent excellent designs matching various kinds of plane forms for diverse indoor environments of kindergartens.
