There are many ways to teach phonics, but they are all similar to one another. Selma E. Herr's Phonics, Phonics from Scholastic Inc., and Phonics from Modern Curriculum Press are much alike in structure. They devide English letters according to their phonetic language. Dr. Orton, in YesPhonics Programs, separates English words into phonograms. As a result, the YesPhonics Programs has 93-97% accuracy in pronunciation. So this thesis is intended to introduce the phonics program to elementary English education. I support Selma E. Herr's phonics method, because she divides the school levels into 4 levels, including the 3rd grade as a readiness level. Furthermore, I apply the 70 phonograms in the YesPhonics Programs to the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade. In this program, it is possible to introduce the following single letter phonograms : a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z. Also two letter phonograms : ai, au, aw, ay, ch, ck, ea, ee, ey, gh, ie, ir, ng, oa, oo, or, ou, ow, oy, ph, sh, th, ti, ui, wr, wh. And finally three letter phonograms : air, igh, wor. I also apply phonics rules including semantic, etymological and preference informations according to the phonograms in the English textbook. When phonograms are learned properly, students will have a greater ability to read all of the words in elementary English textbook. I am confident that this study will be useful for effective elementary English education. Furthermore, phonograms will be needed to make phonics education more effective. Finally, it may be required to do in-depth research on more effective ways and models for phonics in the class. I believe that this study will be helpful for teachers and students who want to have more detailed information about phonics teaching.
