The purpose of this study is to find out an effective way of teaching how to read English words by directing the students' interest in written English to the classroom and by utilizing the logical and systematic aspects that Phonics itself has. Previous researches on Phonics have not paid much attention to the aspect of meaning comprehension, which is the final goal of reading. Thus, this study adopted an integrated teaching method in which a sound-based reading, Phonics, and the meaning-centered reading approach are incorporated. A pre-experiment survey on the students' affective areas such as their interest in English and confidence in English reading was conducted. Reading readiness tests focused on their visual and auditory discrimination abilities were also administered. The control group was taught reading mainly based on the contents of the textbook. The instruction based on the researcher's model of Phonics-based reading was given to the experimental group during the third and fourth periods of each lesson. After the experiment, a post-experiment survey was conducted to find out to what extent affective areas show the change and the results were analyzed. To find out the effect of the method on the students' intellectual areas, another type of post-experiment test on their reading abilities was also administered to both the experimental and control groups. The purpose of this test was to find out whether they could read the words aloud and whether they knew the meanings of the words when they read them. The results of the tests showed that both the experimental and control groups could read aloud, although the differences between two groups were not statistically significant. The control group, however, had more words they could read but did not know the meanings of. This result showed that we needed a Phonics-based reading method which connects the spelling to its sound. The results of the survey on affective areas showed the following. There was a significant difference between the experimental and the control groups in their interest in reading English words and teaching how to read. The experimental group showed a positive response to the question, 'To what extent was Phonic-based reading method helpful to their reading abilities?'. No significant differences were found in their interests in English and their confidence in reading and communicative competence. It can be concluded, however, that Phonics-based reading method affected positively on the students' interest in reading English words. Based on the results of this study, the following can be proposed: First, English teachers should help their students practice reading by integrating the sound and meaning of the words. Second, clues such as picture cards or gestures should be provided when elementary school English teachers teach reading words. Third, various activities of reading based on Phonics are desirable to elementary school students. Fourth, it is desirable that the textbooks be organized for the English teachers to have an easy access to Phonics-based reading method. Fifth, various in-service training programs focused on Phonics-based reading method could be of great help to the elementary school teachers.
