This paper attempts to reexamine the significance of Dazai's works in the middle years(1938--1945) in his whole literary activities by inquiring into his parody fictions in the middle period. Dazai is one of the modern writers who played an active part in the Japanese literary circles from the early Showa period to directly after the Pacific War. He attempted the new expression for "I" from his early works, and tried out the various expression methods for "I" with different viewpoints in his whole literary life. The "I" which Dazai tried to express is entirely different from an "I" story in naturalism. Dazai intended to transcend the naturalistic realism in his various attempts to express "I". But early critics regarded Dazai's works as autobiographical novels, and so they tended to study Dazai's works by an inductive method in relation to his private life. Due to these attitudes, the independence of Dazai's works was not valued properly, and even the literary world of his own was distorted. Dazai's works considered in this paperin his middle years were based upon the method of parody. For Dazai, the methodological problem of the expressions for "I" did not appear newly in the middle period. Rather, Dazai made much of the problem from his early works. But, in the early days, the problem of the expression for "I" was understood from the first person standpoint that I=the author. Dazai was pained by this understanding, and had doubts about his ability and method of expression. At this point, Dazai encountered with the method of parody, through which Dazai could develop his thoughts borrowing from others' experiences. Dazai gave full play to his ability and imagination as a writer, and wrote various works than any writers of the day. The method of parody was the logical conclusion of years of Dazai's inquiry into the methodological problem of the expression of "I". Therefore, this paper observes how the expression for "I" was described in the parody fictions in the middle period, and attempts to look into the significance of the middle period in Dazai's literary life which is regarded as entirely different from the former(1928-1937) or latter period(1945-1948). And this paper also attempts to examine which meaning parody fictions have and what Dazai tries to express by the very method of parody. This paper is made up of 7 chapters altogether including introduction and conclusion. Firstly, in the introduction of the paper, we reexamines the existing interpretation and valuation of Dazai's literary works. Recently Japanese literary researchers point out that the existing valuation of Dazai's literature should be reconsidered. According to them, Dazai's works contain newness and originality ahead of times which can mark an epoch in Japanese modern literary history. This atmosphere of revaluation is due to the doubts about the existing realism. Dazai had doubts about the expression of the established realism because he felt the limitations in the description of "I" as the subject of speech in fiction. He became conscious of the need for a new way of expression which can be recognized as a nonprivate fiction. Dazai thought that we can ensure human reality only from the standpoint that it is in the individual relations between oneself and others that they make sense. A human being is not independent entity whose words and deeds are determined by the various situations formed in the interaction with others. This paper examines several parody fictions in the middle period intrinsically having the angle of "relations" in mind, and in doing so, verifies that a study of ethics or characters cannot but be connected to the work raising the estrangement between speech and its subject. Chapter 2 examines which meaning Dazai's writing method of parody has. Dazai sought after a new way of expression entirely different from the existing preconception of a "I" story, and he encountered with the method of parody. The existing interpretations of Dazai's parody fictions were generally negative laying much stress on the historical situation which brought them about. But this paper values Dazai's parody fictions positively stressing that the method of parody can be attributed to Dazai himself, or Dazai's gift as a writer simply rather than the products of a given period. This paper describes that the method of parody satisfies the basic requirements which Dazai needed in writing novels, and that it is a new sort of creation. Chapter 3 performs the textual analysis of the relevant parody fictions. Onnanoketto is an important work which is a clue to Dazai's parody fictions written in the middle period. In this work, Dazai takes notice of the mysteriously exact description in the original work "Onnanoketto" translated by Mori Ogai casting the original writer for the part of the hero's wife, and explaining how the description for that casting can be successful. The general interpretations of this work are related to the methodological problem of parody, an image of women of the writer's, and Dazai's own experience inferred by the term "aiding murder", and so forth. But this paper lays stress on the wife's will which plays an important role in the reading of the text, trying to make clear what Dazai thinks "realism in the twentieth century" is. In Kakekomiuttae, we pay much attention to the tense structure of the narrator. The expression of "the image of volatile human mind" is changed to Juda's first person monologue in Kakekomiuttae. we think that this change reflects Dazai's strong concern over human relationships. Whereas Dazai focuses on human relationships in Onnanoketto and Kakekomiuttae, he pays much attention to the inner side of human relationships in "Sarutsuka". In "Sarutsuka", he tries to find out the internal factor of tragedy in a human being itself throwing up the viewpoint of "an whim of life" or "a mysterious aspect of human life" presented in the original work. We think that this stands for human tragedy. The last masterpiece written in the middle period, Otogizoshi is a collection of works adapted from the old stories which typically emphasize a reward in accordance with a deed. It contains "Kobutori", "Urasimasan", "Kachikachisan", and "Shitagirisuzume" and so on. The existing studies notice these works are written at the end of the war indicating out that they are the product of the pressure of the times. And the studies point out that the works in Otogizoshi are stories of the absence of the wicked and show Dazai's reconcilation with the reality. But we think that these works should be reconsidered in the aspect of Dazai's critical mind as to how we describe the evil or misery which arises in the relations. In fact, Dazai tries to show that the evil cannot be an object of blame, which is caused in the real life by the situation of the absence of ethics. And he describes how the subject is lossed in the relations, where speech is meaningless by contrast with the world of peace. Therefore this paper raises a question as to the traditional interpretation. that the real world Dazzai describes in the relations is "the middle period", that is the time of stability by trying to grasp what Dazai thinks the evil is and noticing the equality of the characters in the world of narration. In the conclusion, this paper explains that we can not helping touching the problem of self-consciousness which is directly connected with the separation of speech and the subject of it for the writer. Especially, we point out that the situation in which speech is meaningless in self-consciousness is the same as the difficulty which we are faced with when we should narrate ethics in the situation of the absence of ethics. And we argue that Dazai tries to overcome this difficulty by using the method of narration which can bring this nature of speech to life and describing the situation on the whole. Also, we consider the problem as to how we represent a human being in the relations, how we can overcome the situation in which speech is meaningless. Finally, we examine the meaning of a human being who is forced to live in the relations with others redescribing himself. In the inquiry into Dazai's works focusing on the transition from the former period to the latter, we can find out that representing oneself newly by the separation of speech and the subject of it is the moment of self-rebirth and of giving a human a new meaning. Therefore, we emphasize that we should read Dazai's intrinsically in the text by focusing on the narration rather than reading them as private fictions. In short, Dazai could represent himself strategically by the citation of the original text without showing the speaker's point of view in the course of narration. And through this new method of representation which are beyond an "I" story, Dazai could take an active part in literature.
