The purpose of this study is to provide basic data that can promote art education program for infants and toddlers by analyzing the Current situation of art education and teachers' interaction patterns With infants and toddlers. The research questions are as follows; 1. What is the teachers' understanding and the current situation of art education for infants and toddlers? 1-1. What is the teachers' understanding of the purpose and importance of art education for infarcts and toddlers? 1-2. What is the Current situation with regard to materials for art education for infants and toddlers? 1-3. What is the current situation with regarding to the content of art education for infants and toddlers? 1-4. What is the current situation with regard to the management and teaching press of art education for infants and toddlers? 1-5. What is the teachers' understanding of the improvement of art education for infants and toddlers? 2. What are the teachers' interaction patterns in art education for infants and toddlers? 2-1. What kind of interaction patterns do the teachers use in art education for infants and toddlers? 2-2. Are there any differences in the interaction patterns used with infants and those used with toddlers in art education? The subjects of this study were 125 teachers who were selected randomly and 12 teachers who were selected specially for observation in day care centers located in Seoul. A questionnaire that was based on the study by In-suk Lee(2001), Mi-hyun Kim(1998), Schirmacher(2993), Young ja Lee, Jong-wook Lee, Hye-suk Yoo(1998) was used after being modified and supplemented for the purpose of this study. The selected category of teachers' interaction patterns in this study is based on the study by Bredecamp and Rosegrant(1992). Teachers' interactions with infants and toddlers were observed by videotaping in free play time for 1500 minutes. The collected data from the questionnaire were analyzed by frequency and percentage. And the collected data from the observation were analyzed by frequency, mean, standard deviation and x². The results are as follows; First, with regarding to teachers understanding of art education for infants and toddlers, it appears that 100% of the subjects understand the necessity for art education because it is 'the means of self-expression and communication'. Most teachers understand that the purpose of art education for infants/toddlers is 'to develop the ability of large/small muscle usage and its coordination', and 'to develop the creative ability of self-expression . It appears that 60% of the subjects can conduct art activities because many infants anti toddlers are interested in art activities easily, but 40% of the subjects experience difficulty because of the lack of information on art education for infants/ toddlers. Second, regarding the environment for art education, over 70% of the subjects responded that they are organizing a display area for art works and 60% of then have an area for art materials and their storage. The current situation of usage of art materials is as follows; 82.4% of the subjects use 'paste' mostly, followed by 'scissor', 'brush', 'clear tape', 'stamps', in that order. As the result of selecting three items, it appears that over 70% use 'drawing paper', 'colored drawing paper' and 'sketch book' for drawing or decorating activities. When pasting or decorating something on ground materials, over 80% of the subjects responded that they supplied 'colored paper', followed by 'magazine', 'wrapping paper' in that order. For three-dimensional construction activity, over 70% of the subjects responded that they supplied 'dough'. For drawing lines and painting, over 90% responded that they supplied 'crayons', followed by 'colored pencil'. With regard to the standard for choosing art materials for infants and toddlers, over 35% of the subjects consider 'Is it appropriate for infants' and toddlers` developmental stage in general?' and over 25% of them consider 'Is there any connection with the current theme in our class?'. Third, with regard to the content of art education for infants/toddlers, over 80% of the subjects place importance on 'creative representation. activity', approximately 15% of them do 'aesthetically exploration activity' and 5% of them do 'appreciation activity'. In 'creative representation activity', approximately 90% of subject deal with 'drawing' and the next, they do 'tearing and cutting', 'sticking and pasting' which was easy activity for manipulating for infant/toddler. In 'aesthetically exploration activity' and 'appreciation activity', each of 30% deal with diverse exploration activity for aesthetic characteristic of nature and objects with the sense of touch and sight, but which was not observed frequently in class. With regarding to the management and teaching of art education for infants and toddlers, 70% of subjects have scheduled a lesson plan for art education 'per a week' and referenced 'a unit or theme' in cuss for planning. And, 56% of subjects responded that they did art activities at 'the art- area an class' 40% of them 'did not have specific art-area in class'. 76% of subjects chosen 'group- activity time' for art activities mostly, 23.2% of subjects chosen 'free-choice play time' for infant/toddler's art activity. Over 50% of case, Art materials or activity are introduced and explained by teacher at first. As important teacher's role for art education, it is considered that the most important role is to organize environment which offers diverse materials and space, that the second important role is to assist to help children get to the next step as the child feel difficulty. 60% of teachers get most of information of art education for infant/toddler from reference book such as magazine and activity resource. For teacher retraining of art education, approximately 60% of subjects want to learn 'diverse art materials and activities for infants/toddlers'. Many teachers respond that 'the developing teaching methodology and materials' and 'Retraining teacher' are needed for effective art education far infant/toddler. As a result of observation with 11 teacher's interactive behavior while doing art activity, the most frequent interactive pattern was 'Acknowledging'. The teachers in class the class of toddler used more frequently 'Scaffolding' than teachers in the class of infant. However, there were no significant differences in the overall interaction patterns according to the age level.
