This study looks at the history of traditional maedup (knotting art) and see how it changed over the centuries in remains and documents. It also examines the history and structure of the maed up in Chosun period, and the uses, kinds, designs, colors, and characteristics of various maedups. The oldest maedups were cords and braided cords, but they became more ornate in Koryo period (sangchokmaedup : "ginger-shaped" maedup) and seokssimaedup : maedup created by a Ms. Suk, which featured a series of ginger-shaped motifs), and Chosun maedups got even more intricate and variegated both in structure and color, creating more uses for them. Traditional maedup makers got their inspiration from nature and created designs based upon animals, plants, and other objects around them, and most maedups feature symmetrical figures and tend to repeat one or two motifs throughout the work. A clear-cut outline and elaborate workmanship characterize traditional maedups. I looked at old maedups at several museums, and they included maedups for everyday life (76 items in 23 patterns), for clothing (198 items in 23 patterns), ritualistic maedups (63 items in 29 patterns), and ornamental maedups (488 items in 86 patterns). The older they were, the more practical they tended to be, but as time went by, maedups for everyday use and for clothing and rituals gave way to the ornamental ones. Traditional maedup feature over 30 kinds, but many of them got lost or forgot ten over the centuries. The color of maedups often had close association with their uses, and the primary colors (red, blue, yellow), pink, light green, lavender, and purple were favorite color s of maedup makers. Modern maedups feature various pastels and gradated color schemes. After studying Korean traditional maedups, I feel that it is import ant to make efforts to transform it to fit the needs and aesthetic standards of modern society. We need to learn how beautiful traditional maedups are, but then it is equally important to universalize and modernize it ; only then we will be able to create truly valuable objects that are both useful and aesthetically gratifying.
