Hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) are one of the most effective photostabilizers for polymers and have been used in a large number of commercial polymers. However, low molecular weight HALS vaporize easily, emitting harmful amines, and have poor extraction resistance, decreasing their photostabilization effects. They also decompose during processing and migrate within the polymers, resulting in deposition on the polymer surfaces. These drawbacks caused by the low molecular HALS can overcome through the use of polymeric HALS. We report on a new type of polymeric HALS containing phenylmaleimide groups and its effects on the photooxidation of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). A polymeric HALS containing phenylmaleimide groups was prepared by a copolymerization of styrene and N-[4-AN'-((2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinyl) aminocarbonyl- phenyl)maleimide (TMPA) in DME, Two copolymers containing 3 mol% of TMPI with molecular weight of 10800 and 15000 were prepared. Tg of the copolymers was W and 102 oC, respectively, Td was observed at around 390 oC that indicates a good thermal stability. A clear and transparent film of the copolymer and SBR mixture, indicating a good compatability, was obtained through the solvent casting method. The effect of the copolymer on photooxidation of the SBR was studied by the ET-IR and UV absorption spectral changes. That on the photo-crosslinking was observed by the measurements of the insoluble fraction. The results indicated that the photooxidation and photo-crosslinking reaction of SBR were decreased by the addition of the copolymer, The inhibition of the photooxidation of SBR by the copolymer was effective both at 300 and 254 nm of UV light. An experiment of extraction resistance studied by UV absorption spectroscopy indicated that high molecular weight polymeric HALS has low extractability than that of low molecular weight HALS or Cyasorb UV-3529, a commercially available polymeric HALS.
