Sometimes people buy more than two products even though they have the same functions and qualities. The behavior of consumers' "double purchases" is the common phenomenon we can observe in modern economic society. Because the behavior yields joint effect between products, firms can engage in price-discriminating strategies. This thesis explores various strategies of price-discriminating monopolist under the economic situation where consumers make double purchase, and examines its economic consequences on social welfare. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the strategic behaviors by a discriminating monopolist under asymmetric information when the consumers can buy two kinds of products. Incorporating the consumers' double purchase and its joint effect into the standard self-selection model enables us to examine the price discrimination, bundling, and market foreclosure strategies of the monopolist. This thesis is consist of three essays. In the first essay, we show that the degree of price discrimination depends on the relative magnitude of joint effect. Especially, when consumers' double purchases evokes substitution effect, discrimination rate differs from the standard result. We also show that the monopolist does not allow double purchase in the case that strong substitution effect between two goods prevails. However, this may reduce the social welfare. In the analysis, we find that the social welfare will increase when the monopolist practices bundling strategy instead of non-bundling strategy. This result is consistent with the conventional result in the previous literature of price discrimination. That is, the mixed bundling strategy is always Pareto-improving even when consumers have the positive correlation in their preferences. In the second essay, we extend the first essay by assuming no capacity constraints in production. We prove that monopolist's price-discriminating strategies and the resulting levels of social welfare depend on both the range of joint effect and the difference of preference in consumers. Especially, as joint effect is close to positive, the strategy without capacity constraint which induces both consumers to purchase two goods dominates other strategies with capacity constraint. It also yields higher level of social welfare than that under capacity constraint in production. Therefore, capacity constant in production causes monopoly to reduce both his profit and social welfare. In the third essay, we consider the information goods such as software, hardware, and so on. This product is characterized by network effect and compatibility. We show that when there is consumers' double purchases on the same operation system, monopolist exerts his profit maximizing strategies in accordance with the compatibility if the rate of high-valuation consumers in the market is relatively larger than some values. If monopolist can choose his own compatibility, the monopoly selects noncompatibility and induces consumers to make single purchase, which is the best strategy for monopolist, but gives rise to social welfare loss. In the different operation system where consumers buy two products with no compatibility between two goods, we show that double purchase strategy selected by monopolist is the best strategy. This strategy also yields social optimum if the rate of high-valuation consumers in the market is relatively larger than some values.
