In this thesis I will discuss on the relation between liberum arbitrium(free will) and the grace of God(gratia Dei) in the philosophy of Augustinus(A.D. 354-430) who can be called the representative of medieval christian philosophy.
In Ch. 2, I studied the background of Augustinus’s thought in connection with his life. In Ch. 3, I discussed the two ways of recognizing God which he had longed to know through his whole life. In Ch. 4, I studied Augustinus’s understanding of human being as the basis of free will. And in Ch. 5, we discussed how the matter of free will had developed in christianity and we studied On free will, Augustinus’s book.
Through this discussion, I got to know the following facts.
First, Augustinus’s understanding of human being - that is, the first man, Adam, was endowed with freedom from God in which he could avoid committing a sin but he abused this freedom and committed the sin. Therefore he fell into the miserable state that he could not choose but commit a sin. But this means never that human nature itself was corrupted nor decayed. Augustinus, in On free will, penetrated that the only way to free oneself from sin was the grace of God and he also recognized that human’s highest ability was within the will which became to be completed through divine love(agape).
Second, through his life, Augustinus realized that he himself couldn’t change the will but such change could be done only by the grace of God. Therefore his theology can be defined to the theology of grace, which is given to human through Christ, the mediator between God and human.
Tird, with the matter of grace and free will, Augustinus asserted that we should not insist only one side nor deny the other side of them but grace of God and human’s free will should be cooperated, Grace represent’s God’s will to redeem human being. Once grace is given to human being, he cannot refuse it because God’s will to redeem human being is performed. Therefore, there is no opposition between grace and free will but grace endows freedom and the human is going to be the freest being when he obeys the God.
If there is still a few questions inspite of this discussion, they will be like following the thought of Augustinus, a christianplatonist, nevertheless has it still meaning and value today beyond the Middle Ages? And has he thought that can be recognized to have eternal value in himself?
