The purpose of the present study is to focus on the differences between the English and Korean sound systems to predict possible errors and subsequent difficulties Korean learners typically encounter and to suggest effective methods that teachers can apply in order to help facilitate the English pronunciation of Korean learners. Within the frame of the contrastive analysis theory, error analysis was carried out and analyzed. The contrastive analysis hypothesis claims that potential errors and difficulties which the learners of a second language incur can be predicted by exercising the theory. The results of the analysis are as follows. (1) In consonant pronunciation, Korean learners committed errors in order of /b, d, g, f, v, z, ∫, □, □, r, θ, ð/. In vowel pronunciation, they committed errors in order of tense vowels, lax vowels and /e, ε, æ, o, □, □/. (2) Korean learners tend to pronounce with a vowel sound between consonant clusters by rearranging the syllable structure. (3) English is called a stressed-timed language in which stressed syllables tend to occur at regular intervals. This fact makes it very difficult for Korean learners to acquire good pronunciation because Korean is a syllable-timed language where every syllable is spoken nearly with the same strength. (4) Korean learners tend to transfer negatively from Korean phonological processes as nasalization, lateralization and palatalization to English. Based on the results of the analysis, this study presented effective teaching methods of English pronunciation. Communicative approach is appropriate for most learners to set the goal for intelligibility as being understood by a listener at a given time in a given situation. Therefore the methods are based on the approach. In conclusion, as the main causes of their errors often result from the phonological differences between the two languages the English teachers can not guide the students without proper knowledge of contrastive views of English and Korean systematically. Errors may not be avoided as shown, but can not be understood and taught without proper discipline at the early stage of learning.
