Recently, in computer graphics, researches on 3D animations have been very active. One of the important research areas in 3D animation is animation of human being. Moreover, the facial animation is often classified into a special technical one, because it requires a different approach form that of other body parts. Since the materials for the facial animation technology are almost unlimited and very diverse, the facial animation may be a core futuristic industry which has a great, highly value-added potential of growing into new media commodities which allow for its various combinations with films, cartoons, broadcasting, network, music and Internet. However, since it is necessary to express the complicated anatomical structure of face and the delicate facial movements in a three-dimensional way in order to animate the facial expressions, the facial animation is perceived as the most difficult area in the 3D animation. So far, researches on facial expressions and movements have been conducted primarily in the fields of medicine and art, and a considerable quantity of investigations has been accumulated. However, most of the 3D facial models being used actually are produced by animators manually; they draw the characters by frame. Even if they use a 3D software to produce the facial models, such a computer-aided work accounts for a small portion of the 3D work. Anyway, 3D facial modeling requires enormous cost, efforts, time, and an expensive 3D software. This study is aimed at developing a facial expression modelling system based on muscle vector which can produce diverse and realistic facial expressions. 8 standard facial models fitting the characteristics of Korean faces was introduced. Thereupon, this paper suggests a way to model 3D human faces easily and quickly just with the front and profile images. In addition, in order to produce more precise 3D facial models, a delicate adjustment method using the linear spline is introduced. Facial models produced by these methods may be synthesized or varied. Moreover, This paper suggests a method of synthesizing various 3D facial expressions in consideration of the anatomical muscle vectors. Besides, This paper suggests a way to apply such methods to produce partial caricatures by adjusting the control points of the linear spline and the vectors of the facial muscles.
