The purpose of this thesis was to investigate whether the group style, homogeneous-aged group (n=200) and mixed-aged group (n=200), influences the language ability and the social competence of children. Four hundreds children (range=4-, 5-year-olds) from twenty early childhood care centers in DaeGu served as subjects. Equal number of male and female subjects from each age group were tested. For this purpose following research questions were set up. Does the group style, homogeneous-aged group and mixed-aged group, influence the language ability of children? Does the group style, mixed-aged group and homogeneous-aged group, influence the social competence of children? In this study, two methods are used for studying these competences ; one is Jang young ae's for linguistic ability, another is ISCS(Iowa Social Competence Scale: preschool Form) by Pease, Clark & Crase(1979) for social competence. The analysis of the data employed independent t-test and two way ANOVA. The results of this study were as follows. First, the study shows that there is 4-year-olds and, 5-year-olds in the mixed-aged group demonstrated more competence at the language ability scales (vocabulary faculty, language and comprehensive faculty, language and power of expression) than who in the homogeneous-aged. Second, most children 4 years in the mixed-aged group did exhibit superior performance in the capacityas a leader, competence temperament from given ISCS to the same age in another group. 5-year-olds the mixed-aged group performed superior hypersensitiveness from ISCS to children in another group. But they did not perform significantly better in the capacity as a leader, competence temperament, lack of stability character than another. The major result showed that the group style, homogeneous-aged group and mixed-aged group, could enhance the improvement social and language ability for preschoolers.
