PIPS(Preschool Interpersonal Problem ...

The purpose of this study is to find out about the differences in how an infant deals with interpersonal problems according to the degree of the infant's understanding of others' thoughts, gender, and the different types of problems. The following are the subjects of this study. First, is there a difference in solving interpersonal problems between the genders? Second, does the difference in the degree of understanding the others' affect the ability to solve interpersonal problems? To conduct the study, 40 kids under 4, 20 boys and 20 girls from a total of 80 kids, have been picked from kindergarten S in Choonchunshi suburbs. Props used in this study are the ones adjusted from the Wimmer and Perner's study(1983) and the PIPS (Preschool Interpersonal Problem Solving Test) created by Shure and Spivack(1974). The props consisted of 2 assignments with 4 questions each. The first assignment was to check whether the infant has full understanding of his/her emotions. The second assignment was to check whether the infant understands and can tell the wrong beliefs of others. The interpersonal problem solving test consists of 7questions for the infants and 5questions for mothers-children Individual interviews were conducted for this study. The acquired data was totaled up and the average and the standard deviations were calculated according to the deviation data analysis method from the SPSS program in order to verify the differences between gender, the degree of understanding, and the types of problems. The results of this study are as follows. First, the difference in solving interpersonal problems showed a significant difference at P<.05 level. This meant that boys were better at solving interpersonal problems than girls. Second, no significant difference was found according to the difference in degree of understanding others' emotions. Neither did the differences in the types of problems showed any significant difference. Third, although no significant difference in solving interporsonal problems was spotted in the different types of problems, there was a significant difference between the types of problems and gender at P<.01 level. As seen from above, boys possessed better interpersonal problem solving ability than girls, especially involving mother-infant problems. Other results showed that the interpersonal problem solving ability is not affected very much by the degree of understanding of others.
