The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of portfolio on English reading achievement and learners' attitudes toward English learning. First, determine the effect of portfolio on the improvement of students' reading competence. Second, determine the effect of portfolio on the interest degree of students. Third, qualitative analyzing materials made through portfolio learning and recognizing any effect of portfolio. For this study lessons were planned and practiced for five months in two classes of fifth graders in an elementary school in Jeollabukdo. One class focused on the existing textbook, and the other class had the class-work adopting the portfolio. To solve the research questions, a pre and post test was given to the students about the affective domain and the reading competence. To ascertain changes in students, the teacher's observation and interview, learning logs and student self-assessment was used. On the basis of these resources, it was described by both quantitative and qualitative and analysis. The results of the study are as follows; First, when the Portfolio was applied to fifth year elementary school students' English reading comprehension practice, the experimental class and the control class showed a statistically significant difference(F=7.47, p<.01). In the test done before the experiment, two classes whose reading comprehension ability levels are similar were selected; one of the classes was decided as an experimental group, and the other one became a control group. The experimental group had the class-work adopting the Portfolio, and the control group had the class-work based on the existing textbook. The results told that the reading comprehension ability level of experimental class was higher than that of control group, in most parts such as word-reading and sentence-reading. All of those results proved that reading comprehension practice applying the Portfolio evaluation method was effective for students' improving their reading comprehension ability. Second, the examination of changes shown in the areas of students' self-confidence and attitude toward English reading comprehension and their interest degrees told that their participation attitude significantly changed before and after the experiment. However, with respect to interest rates toward self-confidence and reading comprehension, the average value of the group who applied Portfolio rose more than that of the group who didn't apply the method; no statistically significant difference was shown. Third, 12 students were sampled, who had a low score in a questionnaire survey and reading comprehension test, and their studying process was analyzed, because it was thought that most students don't have a sufficient basis of English ability, so that they had much difficulty in reading words. In case of students whose reading comprehension ability is low, a significant activity of finding out, attaching studying materials and helping with one another rather than a simple activity of reading words was necessary. The interrelationship between teachers' observational evaluation and students' self-evaluation toward reading comprehension ability and attitude, and the interrelationship between students' self-evaluation and students' mutual evaluation were proved to be significantly positive. These study results told that reading comprehension class applying Portfolio was effective students' increasing their reading comprehension ability and that the class-work of Portfolio surely provides the motivation making students increase their self-confidence and participating attitude in reading comprehension classes. also, it is expected that other current English classes following the 7the National Curriculum will consider the Portfolio evaluation method for students whose reading comprehension ability level is low.
