A rapid growth in the computer and telecommunication technologies in the modem age has caused a wide range of transformation in the human society. This so-called 'digital revolution' has a tendency to demonstrate global and decentralized characteristics that are based on the contemporary internet technologies unlike the previous centralized and monotonic characteristics. The earlier physical and actual performances are being replaced by fictitious acts in the so-called cyber space and all these movements have worked together to construct a cyber civilization. In the architectural society, it is now possible to achieve a more realistic and rich expression using the computers, compared to the previous 2-dimensional expression technique and the analog processes. In addition, more economical practices such as a well-organized information exchange in the cooperative task and a substantial improvement in the efficiency became feasible. This paper describes these phenomena in terms of the presentational and procedural aspects. In addition, it also investigates these phenomena in terms of the network-oriented process in the architecture. In particular, many architects who have faced the limitation in the previous deterministic, materialistic, and linear ideas started to express the architecture through the Fractal geometric theory or the non-Euclidian idea. This paper categorized these phenomenain terms of the dematerialistic, non-linear, and hyper-superficial characteristics. In the application of the idea of the fictitious space or the cyber-space to the architecture, a new attempt has taken place that denies the limitation of both time and space and accepts the fluidity of liquid and the human body in order to comply with the obscure order of nature. In this study, these recent tendency in the space design is defined as the digital architecture. This paper investigates the distinctiveness and characteristics of this digital architecture through the examples of 6 architects and their 12 works. 1) In essence, the digital architecture is expressed by the cyber space. Therefore, it demonstrates 'non-restricted place' that is independent of the space. 2) The digital architecture refuses static and stationary figures and focuses on the varying processes that often occur in real-time (i.e., the characteristics of the 'animate form'). 3) Liquid-like flexible/adaptive characteristics can be found in the digital architecture where the interior and exterior spaces are continuously being transformed by the exterior sources or with the human interaction. 4) The digital architects acknowledge the limitation in the preceding Euclidian geometric idea and experiment with the topological transformations and create non-linear geometric shape. 5) The elements that constitute the surface of the digital architecture do not carry a specific predefined characteristics, rather, it exhibits variable, transferable at times, and non-superficial characteristics. 6) The digital architecture is an interactive architecture that operates through the network between human and building or between buildings. The idea of the digital design which has originated from the digital technologies has freed human race from the limitation and the restriction of the time and space. The value of the space sought by the digital architecture can be distinguished from the existing ideas of the space since it is non-deterministic, non-materialistic, lightweight, obscure, and instantaneous idea, compared to the existing deterministic, materialistic, heavyweight, obvious, everlasting idea. This idea is to take a step away from the dimension of a simple system that pursues the mechanical values, which have been dominant for past centuries. Therefore, it attempts to create an organic space as a complex system and realizes non-deterministic and obscure phenomena of the nature (which has been impossible to be explained by the existing pure science) in the (architecture by incorporating the fictitious cyber technologies into the physical space and by materializing these through the idea of the liquidization. The idea of the space that is pursued by the digital architecture currently has several limitations when combined with the physical actuality. It is the architecture of the experimental and fresh paradigm in this transitional period where many architectural trends of the twenty-first century co-exist. Therefore, it would require additional extensive and diverse research activities on this subject.
