The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of sensory integration program on the cognitive and motor abilities of children with developmental disabilities. The subjects in this study were three selected children who were attending daycare centers at child psychiatry clinic in the city of Gwangju. To gauge the level of improvement in their cognitive and motor abilities, the standardized PEP and Oseretsky motor ability inventory were put to use. The experiment was conducted in 21 sessions as part of the daily routine at the daycare center. And then the pretest and posttest results produced by the two types of instruments were compared. The findings of this study were as below: First, the sensory integration program had an effect on furthering the cognitive ability of the children with developmental disabilities. The mean developmental age of child A was one year and seven months, and that of child B was one year and eight months. That of child C was one year and nine months, and all the children made a progress in cognitive developmental age. By subarea, they made the best improvement in imitation area, followed by verbal comprehension, perception and verbal expression areas, as their developmental age appeared to be two and one months in imitation area, one year and seven months in perception area, one year and eight months in verbal comprehension area, and one year and three months in verbal expression area. This fact suggested that the sensory integration program exercised a positive influence. Second, the sensory integration program was effective for the enhancement of the motor abilities of the children with developmental disabilities. In motor domain, every child showed an improvement, since child A was nine months old, child B was 10 months old and child C was one year and seven months old. By subarea, their developmental age was one year and four months in minor muscular movement, four months in major muscular movement, and one year and six months in eye-hand coordination. The eye-hand coordination marked the best progress, followed by minor muscular movement and major muscular movement. According to the Oseretsky motor ability test results, both child A and B showed 11 month improvement, and child C developed by one year and eight months. This fact illustrated that the sensory integration program had a positive impact on that.
