Many of the critics and the scholars have been spoken of Gim Soo-yeong as a represntative figure among the 1950's modernist poets. However, his modernism is something that had been developed separately from all other contemporary modernist groups, and (it is an extra-ordinary point) his modernism seems very ethical attitude towards world and most of all times, to himself which is as well described in his prose work Spit Out, Poetry. In this important and the last poetic prose, he manifests the unity of form and content, as well as that of the ethical and the epistemological. In this thesis, I regarded of the essence of his modernism as ethical attitude which has been expressed as his unique word, 'On-mom'-it means body as a whole-, tried to look into the process of this concept's formation through his poetry's development. In the process of his poetry's evolution, the key word is Modernity. To him, Modernity means that of people's intelligence before it of poetics, and it is something has to be done ahead of accomplishing system of the state or of any other material forms that "looks" modern. Therefore, to be modernized means to have free understanding out of all the old inherent prejudices, and eventually, this freedom could be seen as an ability to get newer and newer; the everyday renovation of the self. Some might say that a great poet like Gim should have had the intellectual ability to explain the one's peculiar historical circumstances and it is the heart of the political aspect of Modernity. I would like to say Gim's Modernity has rather broad sense which is related with general world cognition. That's why the poet who was born and grown up under the Japanese emperialistic colony did not define nor name the independence of the mother country and the war that he experienced himself. It seems that he didn't want to speak up the voice for politics because the environment of the society had not been ready to listen to him(although many of his late works are quite radical); to penetrate into the national historical stage, one must think globally. It is the Modernity as world simultaneity. So Modernity comes to be involved with the two important terms; one is the method to the world recognition and the other is the historicity of the national circumstance. These are clearly expressed, in his poem Helicopter, as duplicated view for the helicopter, the symbolic of the civilization. The helicopter is an object from the civilized outside, and it implies interruption and renovation out from the constant cultural history and freedom, and the liberal democratic political system which had been "given" option under the warfare in the early 1950's historical circumstances. Here, the Freedom has two meanings; in the broad sense, it leads to the concept of renovation through pursuing death-drive digging into the artistic methodology, and the second meaning of the freedom is a symbolic of the modern political system-the liberal democratism which leads at last, his political ideal to the anarchistic form of the state through the poet's expectation and disillusions. We can find the trail that he tried to achieve freedom with the death-drive in artistic aspect in the poem Byeong-Poong, which means 'partition'. Furthermore, it would be followed by that such a deliberation on the unnameable artistic object and emphasis on the lightness caused by his endeavor to transcend over every spiritual state he would've met. His last poetic work, Grass shows us the whole picture of his inside pursuit as such and the 'noise' of outside world ultimately gathered to become great consonance. For pursuing the second meaning of the Freedom, the liberal democracy as the modern political system is highly engaged with his morality and the ethics and based in his experience at Korean war. I am surly suppose that Gim expected the ideal of liberal democracy to become true when the April Student Revolution that has taken place in 1960. As the revolution got ugly with the politicians' wrong decisions, he would've come to realize the expectation has been betrayed and simply turned out to be an illusion. It is not unrelevant to practicing 'lightness', and his one of the masterpieces shows the big picture of the ultimate form of the ideal community that he came to be drawn. The form of that ideal community as described in Variation On Love is, I should say, somewhat anarchistic and liberal; the state of radically liberal and moral individuals. On-mom that has been manifested in his last prose, Spit Out, Poetry is the essence of the view and the poetics that he reached at last through the process that I mentioned above, for his whole life as a poet(although it was lamentably short). This theses is just a little peep into the "modern" poet's short but great untimely meditations that was perfectly timely but simply ignored by the contemporaries.
