선정된 건축가는 Peter Eisenman, Daniel Libeskind, Frank O. Gehry, Ben van Berkel, Rem Koolhaas, Steven Holl, Zaha Hadid, NOX, F.O.A., Lab, Endo Shuhei, Jakob & MacFarlane, Peter Cook & Colin Fournier, Coop Himmelb(l)au, ABB Architekten & Bernhard Franken, Eric Owen Moss이다.

The concept of the nonlinear, originated from the scientific paradigm, is nowadays widely studied in various social fields. Thanks to the rapid change and development of digital technology, combined with other new technologies, materials and structural methods in construction, the nonlinear creates a unique variety of spacial form, different from the past, that at the same time suggests unlimited possibility. The analysis of the nonlinear concept of space and new formative principles suggests a promising alternative to architectural design that is facing the limit of reductionism and absolutism of modern architecture. This study recognizes the nonlinear concept as a paradigm which has been researched in various fields such as social science, economics, arts and architecture, as well as in natural science; it analyzes the affect of the nonlinear concept and it's formative principles on architectural design through analysis of recent examples; and, considers the nonlinear as a method of architectural design for the future. The research methodology in this study encompasses and utilizes 24 case studies by 16 architects since 1997. The studied architects are Peter Eisenman, Daniel Libeskind, Frank O. Gehry, Ben van Berkel, Rem Koolhaas, Steven Holl, Zaha Hadid, NOX, F.O.A., Lab, Endo Shuhei, Jakob & MacFarlane, Peter Cook & Colin Fournier, Coop Himmelb(l)au, ABB Architekten & Bernhard Franken, Eric Owen Moss. The analysis is based on the characteristics of nonlinear concept and it's formative principles. The nonlinear concept is subcategorized by fluidity, complexity, unpredictability, fractal, chaos, self-organization, topological transformation and deconstruction. The formative principles are subcategorized by the first deformation of overlapping(addition), elimination(deduction), scaling(multiplication), disjunction(division) and by the second deformation of folding, twisting, distortion and wave. A summarization and analysis of the case studies on the conceptual characteristics of nonlinear space and formative principles follow. The nonlinear concepts of fluidity, complexity and unpredictability are found in many cases. The fluidity concept is applied mostly in formality. Also in the space generation principle or in the formative aspects of program, the concept of fluidity is expressed in various ways that this fluidity from functional aspect which lead the dimensional change on space and is at the same time connected with the concept of topological transformation. The concept of self-organization is found simultaneously with that of fractal and chaos, which is in line with the scientific concept of fractal and chaos, which includes the self-organization process. Fractal, chaos, and deconstruction are not found in many works, while the space with fractal concept especially presents differentiation and unique formality. Formative principles of nonlinear architecture are clearly divided into two groups; the frequent and the non-frequent principles. The frequent formative principles are the overlapping from the first deformation and the folding and wave from the second deformation. The non-frequent formative principles are elimination, scaling, disjunction from the first deformation and the twisting and distortion from the second deformation. Compared to the first deformation, the second deformation weighs more heavily due to its three-dimensionality and the complicated characteristics it represents in the formative principles of nonlinear architecture. Overlapping from the first deformation is the most frequent formative principle and it has evolved to express a more free and fluid form from past work, in particular from the work of deconstructionist, which was in the geometric forms of straight line, overlapping grid and deconstruction. Wave, the next frequent formative principle, is a representative principle of fluidity in form that expresses infinite fluidity akin to biological form or a consistent wave, like that of water. Folding leads the dimensional change of architecture and is related with its functional aspect of traveling system of internal organization or program and is connected to the concept of topological transformation. Founded in various recent works, folding is a formative principle to freely organize a space with rapidly changing digital technology and will be a more important method of architectural form in the future. The non-frequent formative principles of elimination, scaling, disjunction, twisting and distortion are not often found, but some of the formative principles of nonlinear architectural form are found in conjunction with the other principles. In conclusion, the space we are now living in has been modified with the development of new technologies, digital technologies which will continue to rapidly change future architectural form and space. Among the changes, the concept of the nonlinear has been an expression of new creative form on architecture. Accordingly, this paper recognizes this nonlinear paradigm and analyzes and consolidates the concept of the nonlinear and formative principles in latest architectural design. The result is a depiction of the architectural design trend, as impacted by this nonlinear paradigm and the associated changes. First, the design process of nonlinear architecture has actively taken advantage of the evolving digital technologies. The architects influenced by digital technology examine the possibilities of new architectural form in a totally different way than existing methods that provides the opportunity for a different spatial experience to those seeking versatile experiences in this complicated era. Secondly, every case studied in this paper has a unique design process of its own. Nonlinear architectures have their roots of space generation achieved through experimentation with the nature of physical materials or by the reflection of regional symbolism which allows us to be designers who emphasize the result over the process and who are aware of the importance of the process and the creativity. Thirdly, nonlinear architecture is presented as an objet in form and also as an urban landmark that strengthens a city's competitiveness and economic power in this rapidly shrinking global world. Fourth, according to this study, nonlinear architecture is excellent for pursuing diversity and complexity, but lacks in it's abilities to reflect a region and it's climate, and in combining emotionalism and environmentalism-friendly aspects. If nonlinear architecture could display the regional and cultural identity of space along with new, unusual, and creative applied spatial experience concepts, it becomes a differentiated method of architectural design and an important strategy for cultural survival at the same time. Finally, in the use of newly-born concept of nonlinear concept for corresponding architectural design, the question of how much it could satisfy the quality of our life should be asked and additional in-depth study should be continued. This paper, as a study on the recent concept of nonlinear architecture and formative principles, should be a reference for the application of nonlinear concept to architectural design.
