② 주기능이 서로 반대인 Se(우뇌)와 Ni(좌뇌), Ne(우뇌)와 Si(좌뇌), Te(좌뇌)와 Fi(우뇌), Fe(좌뇌)와 Ti(우뇌)인 심리유형은 좌우뇌선호에 있어서도 반대로 선호하는 경향이 있었다.

With the development of cognitive science and brain science, there has been a growing interest in and discussions on the relationship between the brain and psychology(mind). Specifically, the studies of Roger Wolcort Sperry, the winner of 1982 Nobel Prize in medicine, on the structure and functions of the brain triggered active researches on the laterality of brain function. In addition, theories on the MBTI psychological types as well as psychological tests based on the analytic psychology of C. Jung have earned worldwide credibility and popular consensus. In this context, the present study attempts to examine the effects of brain laterality and left/right brain preferences on the MBTI psychological types for the purpose of identifying the relationship between the brain and the mind. The major questions in this research are as follows: The first question is "is there any correlation between the left/right brain preferences and MBTI psychological types?" The second one is "is there any correlation between the brain laterality and MBTI psychological types?" The third one is "is there any correlation between the laterality of brain function and the preferences for either left or right brain? And, the last (and the most comprehensive) question is "do the brain laterality and the lateral preferences affect the psychological types in MBTI?. Through the comprehensive research and analysis, this study identified these influences. The following three measurement tools were used in carrying out this study based on the above questions. First, the left/right brain preferences were measured with electroencephalogram(EEG) and the Brain Preference Indicator (BPI) constructed through clinical testings. Second, the brain laterality was measured using the Cognitive Laterality Battery(CLB) written by H. W. Gordon (1978), of which the validity was verified by the results of clinical testings conducted to patients with brain disorders. Third, the psychological types in MBTI were identified by the MBTI Form GS. These tests were conducted to a total of 211 college students: 176 of them had all the three examinations, while 35 students underwent only BPI and MBTI tests because of time limitations. The first question concerning the relationship between the lateral preferences for either right or left brains and the MBTI psychological types was dealt with conducting the ANOVA and Crosstabulation to all the 211 subjects. The second question pertinent to the correlation between the brain laterality and the MBTI psychological types was addressed by carrying out a correlation analysis to 176 students. Through this analysis, the correlational features of each group, similarities and differences in the examined correlations among groups were compared and analyzed. The third question about the correlation between the laterality of brain functions and the lateral brain preferences was dealt with by a correlation analysis conducted to 176 subjects. Then, the correlational features of each group, and the differences in the examined correlations among groups were compared and analyzed. Finally, to deal with the final integrative question about the influence of both the brain laterality and the left/right brain preferences on the MBTI psychological types, a path analysis was conducted based on the correlation analysis conducted to 176 subjects. The results of the above research processes are as follows: First, there was a very close correlation between the lateral brain preferences and MBTI psychological types. ① As the preference for the left brain is higher, the subjects tend to prefer introvertness(I), sensing(S), thinking(T), and judgement(J). On the other hand, as the right brain preference is higher, they tend to prefer extrovertness(E), intuition(N), feeling(F), and perception(P). ② The pairs of psychological types that are opposite in their main functions -i.e. Se(right brain) and Ni(left brain); Ne(right) and Si(left); Te(left) and Fi (right); Fe(left) and Ti(right)- generally favor the side of the brain that is opposite to the counterpart. For example, extrovert sensors(Se) show high preference for the right brain, while the opposite type, introvert intuitives(Ni) tend to favor the left side of the brain. The rest pairs showed the same result, which suggests a close correlation between the psychological types and lateral brain preferences. Second, the analysis of the relationship between the brain laterality and the MBTI psychological types revealed various correlational features, among which significant general characteristics were found. That is, the brain laterality factors had a correlation with the cognitive functions(sensing and intuition) and the judgemental functions(thinking or feeling). This is a significant result that shows the correlation between the brain functions and the mind(psychology). Specifically, the right brain factors were associated with the cognitive functions (sensing or intuition: SN) and the left brain factors were correlated with the judgemental functions(thinking or feeling: TF). Third, the analysis of the correlation between the brain laterality and the lateral preferences demonstrated a close relationship between the right brain factors and the lateral preferences. That is, in the group of students who prefer and are superior in the left brain, those recording lower scores in the 'finding the same shapes' and 'finding interlocking pieces' showed high preference for the left brain. In the group preferring and superior in the right brain, the higher score in the 'completing the picture' indicated higher preference for the right brain. In other words, 'finding the same shapes', 'finding interlocking pieces' and 'completing the picture' are all the factors showing the characteristics of the right brain. And, the superior tendencies in each of the right brain factors had a critical influence on the left/right brain preferences. Fourth, it was conjectured that the brain laterality and the lateral preferences had statistically significant direct or indirect influences on the MBTI psychological types. That is, left and right brain factors affect the lateral preferences for either left or right brain, and the lateral preferences had both direct and indirect effects on the MBTI psychological types. At the same time, it was found that left and right brain factors as well as lateral preferences had a direct influence on the MBTI psychological types. Finally, an integrative analysis of the above four results showed the following characteristics: 1. The right brain factors in the brain laterality had a statistically significant correlation with the preferences for the cognitive functions(sensing or intuition: SN), the functions of the mind in MBTI. 2. The left brain factors in the brain laterality had a statistically significant correlation with the preferences for the judgemental functions(thinking or feeling: TF), the functions of the mind in MBTI. 3. Lateral brain preferences had a close correlation with all the four MBTI indexes of brain preference. Specifically, the comparative analysis between the pairs of MBTI psychological types that had opposite main functions demonstrated the highest degree of statistically significant correlation with the indexes of preferences for either judgement or perception(JP) which indicate the modes of behaviors or lifestyles. That is, as the subject prefers the right brain functions, he/she was closer to a perceiver, while higher preference for left brain functions meant he/she was more of a judger. By reviewing the theoretical background concerning the effects of brain laterality and lateral preference on the MBTI psychological types and by deducing the implications of the statistical analysis results, synthetic conclusion was drawn as follows: First, the characteristics such as the blood type or food preference may have an influence on the preference for extrovertness or introvertness indicating the direction of energy. Second, the right brain factors in the brain laterality may have an influence on the cognitive functions(sensing or intuition: SN), the functions of the mind. Cognitive functions(SN) are the irrational functions of the mind. These are closely related with the right brain characteristics. Considered in relation to the brain structure, cognitive functions have many common features with the characteristics of the limbic system. The critical period for the development of the right brain is 4-7 years of age. So, the right brain laterality and the developmental characteristics seem to affect the cognitive functions(sensing or intuition: SN) and contribute to the determination of unique individual psychological types. Third, the left brain factors in the brain laterality may have an influence on the judgemental functions(thinking or feeling: TF), the functions of the mind. Judgemental functions(TF) are the rational functions of the mind. These are closely related with the left brain characteristics. Considered in relation to the brain structure, judgemental functions have many common features with the characteristics of the cerebral cortex. The critical period for the development of the left brain is 7-9 years of age. So, the left brain laterality and the developmental characteristics seem to affect the judgemental functions(thinking or feeling, TF) and contribute to the determination of unique individual psychological types. Fourth, although left/right brain preference has a correlation with all the MBTI indexes for the brain preference, it will have the greatest influence on the preference for either judgement or perception(JP), the indexes of preferences in the mode of behaviors or lifestyles. That is, lateral preference has a direct influence on the individual behaviors and lifestyles. Those who prefer the left brain functions tend to show higher preference for perception, while those favoring the left brain tend to lean toward judgement in their behaviors and lifestyles. This is consistent with the conclusion of this study suggesting the correlation between the right brain factors in the brain laterality and the cognitive functions and between the left brain factors and the judgemental functions. Passing through the critical period for the development of both left and right hemispheres at 9-12 years of age, specialization of the two hemispheres are accomplished according to the mode of paying attention differentiated by individual preferences and selections. At the same time, development of corpus callosum is activated in this period. Through the process of corpus callosum development and the brain specialization, individual brain laterality and lateral preference are developed characteristically. This, as a result, affects the psychological type of an individual as well as his/her mode of behaviors and lifestyle. Therefore, exerting close and various influences on the MBTI psychological types, brain laterality and lateral preference have a critical influence on the characteristics of the 16 psychological types in MBTI. As a result, these have fundamental effects on the formation of unique individual psychological type. This result also implies a close relationship between the brain and the psychology(the mind). In this regard, the present study may be helpful in scientific understanding of one's own past and present and in the desirable planning for the future through cognitive psychological understanding of oneself and others,. In addition, this study may contribute to excavating and developing individual capability and talent in the process of finding one's own quality, interest, and aptitude based on the insight into self-understanding. Pedagogics should develop its basic studies on humans as well as the studies in the field of cognitive science or brain science. When learners with diverse psychological types are given with various educational environments, teaching/learning methods, and school institutions as well as with the opportunities of free choices, education will be able to contribute to the desirable individual and social development.
