The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of story discussion activity after reading fairytale books containing interpersonal problem solving on young children's interpersonal problem solving thinking.
For the purpose, following research questions were established :
1. How does story discussion activity concern with fairytale books affect young children's interpersonal problem solving thinking?
11. How does story discussion activity concern with fairytale books affect young children's alternative solution thinking?
12. How does story discussion activity concern with fairytale books affect young children's consequential thinking?
13. How does story discussion activity concern with fairytale books affect young children's causal thinking?
14. How does story discussion activity concern with fairytale books affect young children's meansends thinking?
Subjects of this study were 40 fiveyearold children attending two kindergartens attached to elementary schools in Cheongju, Chungbuk. Experimental group consisted of 20 fiveyearold children(10 boys, 10 girls) attending a kindergarten attached to U elementary school, and control group consisted of 20 fiveyearold children(10 boys, 10 girls) attending a kindergarten attached to H elementary school. The age ranges of the subjects were from 5 years 2 months to 6 years, and the average age was 5 years 6 months.
The instruments used in this study were "Korean Intelligence Scale for Children(KISC)" and "Interpersonal Cognitive Problem Solving Test (ICPS)." ICPS was developed by Spivack(1976) and translated by Park ChanOk(1986). Ten fairytale books containing interpersonal problem solving were used for the story discussion activity. Ten experimental treatments had been conducted for 10 weeks, from April 21th to July 5th, 2003, with one session per week.
To test the research questions, two groups Mean and Standard Deviation of interpersonal problem solving thinking scores were calculated, and then ttests were conducted to test group differences.
Results of this study were as follows :
First, the positive solution thinking of young children's alternative solution thinking differed significantly between experimental group treated with story discussion activity concern with fairytale books and control group(p<.001), but the negative solution thinking of young children's alternative solution thinking showed no difference between experimental group and control group.
Specifically, the positive solution thinking differed significantly between two groups according to their interpersonal counterpart: peer(p<.001), mother(p<.001), and teacher, p<.001.
However, the negative solution thinking showed no difference between two groups according to their interpersonal counterpart: peer, mother, and teacher.
Second, young children's consequential thinking differed significantly between experimental group treated with story discussion activity concern with fairytale books and control group, p<.001.
Specifically, the causal thinking differed significantly between two groups according to their interpersonal counterpart: peer(p<.01), mother(p<.01), and teacher, p<.01.
Third, young children's causal thinking differed significantly between experimental group treated with story discussion activity concern with fairytale books and control group, p<.001.
Specifically, the causal thinking differed significantly between two groups according to their interpersonal counterpart: peer(p<.01), mother(p<.01), and teacher, p<.05.
Forth, young children's meanends thinking differed significantly between experimental group treated with story discussion activity concern with fairytale books and control group, p<.01.
Specifically, the causal thinking differed significantly between two groups according to their interpersonal counterpart: peer(p<.05), mother(p<.01), and teacher, p<.01.
