There are many events that cannot be explained logically or confirmed sensibly amongst the things that we experience and understand. The creation and enjoyment of the arts is one of such cases. Why does the human being create the arts, and especially, what is the ontological basis for the existence of the abstract art such as music? In order to find the answer to this question, various cognitive faculties have been examined, but nowhere than the power of imagination in artistic experiences explains it better. Therefore, this study has looked into the fundamental mental capacities concerning the faculty of imagination that allow the human beings creating and enjoying music; and prepare a clear concept of musical imagination in order to search for the role and value of the musical imagination; and the ways of how musical imagination works through the phenomenological study.
For such purposes, the root meaning of the musical imagination is investigated through the etymological study of the word "imagination", and its various manifestations through the history of Western culture are surveyed in order to prepare a theoretical bases for the study of the role and value of the musical imagination. The primary factors influencing the musical imagination are examined using Bachelard's theory of imagination as a reference. Although Bachelard's theory, which successfully organizes the phenomenon of image and imagination, is primarily based on the literature, it can be served as a reference to categorize the musical imagination. The validity of such approach can be seen in the following summary of the final results of this study.
Firstly, the musical imagination is a cognitive faculty that allows the listener to recognize music not as "events of independent sounds", but as a relational web of "the compound of significances that creates a meaning.
Secondly, the musical imagination not only provides the motivation for the composer to create a piece of music, but also it allows the listener to create a subjective image of his own inspired by a piece of music.
Thirdly, as Bachelard's theory of imagination categorizes the imagination into formal, materialistic, and dynamic, these categories have been applied to the musical imagination as certain steps to be taken by music appreciators. They subjectively bestow certain significance and imagine certain images to what they are appreciating within the boundary of a human being's life and nature. It has been discovered that the highest and the most free form of musical imagination is the one felt through the purely abstract instrumental music.
Fourthly, the musical imagination is influenced by everyday and musical experience as well as the musical discernment in terms of its contents and quality. It suggests that there is a room for the enhancement of musical imagination by posterior efforts, and although the nature of musical imagination is freedom, such freedom is restricted by individual experiences and culture, environment and the human conditions within the limit of universality.
It is necessary to re-appraise the musical imagination as a fundamental human faculty that enables experiencing beauty through music.
