(The) Effect of parent education program focused on Floor-Time method on the social development of the children with PDDNOS원문보기

The purposes of this study were (1) to develop a parent education program focused on the Floor-Time method for the children with pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified, (2) to investigate whether the parent education program increased these children's developmental level of communication ability, verbal and social ability and decreased developmental delays, and (3) to investigate whether the parent education program extended the interaction cycles between children and mothers while playing. Three children who met Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria for PDDNOS and diagnosed as PDDNOS by psychiatrists, were selected from the play therapy center located in Seoul. These three children's mothers participated in the parent education program which includes several sessions of training mothers giving information about the parents' intervention of play and how to intervene in play. This program also includes Floor-time method in which children and their mothers play freely for 20-30 minutes on the floor everyday. During the Floor-time, mothers followed the children's leads and interests and expanded their pretend play. The parent education was administered once a week for 7 months, which are 10 sessions, 9 sessions in the play therapy center and 1 session at their home. The results of this study are (1) the frequency and length of mother-child interaction cycles increased positively, (2) children's behaviors on each developmental level of Greenspan's Obsevation Scale changed into more positive direction, (3) test scores on PDDST, SMS, and CARS changed positively, (4) the level of decontextualization ofchildren's pretend play were increased, and (5) mother-child interaction time during play at home and the frequency of daily Floor-time increased according to the mother's report. The implications and limitations of this study were discussed with suggestions for the future study.
