This is to study the Chilchae(7-stroke beat rhythm) of the Utdari Nongak. Utdari Nongak is well conserved of it's original form in Daejon, Ansong and Pyungtaek of Kyungki, Chungchong reginoal area with such master players as Soon-gap Song, Ki-bok Kim and Yong-rae Kim. The purpose of this study is to compare the way how those three players differently start, run, tie and untie the beat rhythm of the Chilchae as to the four steps in composition (introduction, development, conversion and summing up). Through this study, some characteristic differences among those three are confirmed as follows. 1) The four step beat composition of the Chilchae are 10-6-10-10 in Daejon area, where as it is 10-11-6-10 in Ansong and Pyungtaek area. 2) Two types of running beat rhythm are collected in Daejon area, and one each in Ansong and Pyungtaek area. The running beat rhythm of Daejon and Pyungtaek area has the same form with tieing beat rhythm since it ends by "gaek", but not by "gaegaeng" Where as in Ansong area, the base beat rhythm is used as ending part. 3) 10 variational beat rhythms are found in Daejon area and 11 in Ansong, 6 in Pyungtaek. They usually use S or 6 variational beat rhythms during each line formation, but numerous variation can be made ad lib. 4) Sangsoi (leader of Kwenguari which is one of Korean traditional gong) use a tieing beat rhythm with "gaek" in the ending part when they make four line formations (north, south, east and west). 5) Four types of untying beat rhythms are collected in Daejon area, and 2 each in Ansong and Pyungtaek area. It is used two or four times when they go out from a line formation. As untying beat rhythm, they use dumb beat rhythm which is called by the fact that Kwenguari is not played at seven Jing (another kind of Korean traditional gong) positions. With this study we can found that the Chilchae of the Utdari Nongak has well formed of the four steps in composition - start, running, tieing and untying. For the next study, an annex that shows the different holding method of Kwenguari stick in Daejon, Ansong and Pyungtaek areas, is attached with the hope that it would be useful for younger students.
