This study was done to determine the prevalence and the characteristics ofhair dressers’ musculoskeletal pain and to provide basic data for preventionand management of these pains. The questionnaires were given to 99 owners and workers who worked at 50 hair salons in Cheonan City. The subjects of the study consisted of 80 women and 19 men. Their average age was 31.7 years. They worked 11.5 hours a day on average. Eighty three percent of the respondents reported the persistence musculoskeletal pain. To the question of “Is the pain directly related with your work?” 99% of them answered, “related.” Eighty four percent of them had pain in the shoulders; 84% in the wrists; 74% in the lower back and the arms; 66% in the fingers; 59% in the neck; 45% in the knees; 44% in the calves; 41% in the ankle; and 38% in the toes; and 34% in elbow. Ninenty one percent of the respondents replied that they never received occupational health education on prevention of the musculoskeletal pain, and 61.6% of them answered that this education is necessary. Many of the respondents replied that the causes of the pain are mainly from “awkward posture (61.6%)” and “repetitive movements (69.7%)”. The working postures and the repetitive movements appear to be the main cause of their pain. Tools not ergonomically designed and the general working environment also causes this pain. In conclusion, ergonomic improvements in hair salon working environments, equipment, and education regarding working postures, and the repetitive movements are required.
