A three dimensional FE-BE coupled numerical model is proposed for free-field prediction of train induced ground vibrations. The frequency dependent characteristics of the waves depend on various systems. Speeds of moving load, ground conditions, and interactions between propagating media produce different propagation characteristics of the waves. Variations in frequencies characterize propagating waves, and thus the dominant aspects of the wave propagating systems must be considered for three dimensional analysis for train induced ground vibration. The objective of this study is to develop a numerical prediction model which fully accounts for dynamic soil behavior, while taking into account the evaluation of the track-soil interaction forces and the calculation of the ground-borne vibrations. A finite element formulation is used to describe the train and the track (rail-railpad-sleepers). A direct stiffness formulation is applied to model a soil as a horizontally layered viscoelastic halfspace. Using an indirect boundary element method, the dynamic stiffness matrix of a set of sleepers on the surface of the layered halfspace is calculated. Frequency dependent relations between the track-soil interaction forces and the displacements of the sleepers are transformed to a recursive evaluation of the forces in the time domain. This time domain analysis enables the prediction model to account for non-linear behaviour between wheel and halfspace. The introduction of the rail roughness in the model requires a statistical description. Using the spectral density function, irregularity profiles are derived for which the track-soil interaction forces are calculated by passage of train. Statistical analysis results in the spectral density of the track-soil interaction forces. Based on the Green’s functions of the layered halfspace, the spectral density of the ground-borne vibrations is predicted. To estimate the effect of various parameters on wave propagation behavior, numerical studies are performed and the importance of the accurate and consistent soil model for the evaluation of the track-soil interaction forces as well as the prediction of the ground-borne vibrations is demonstrated. Therefore, the proposed prediction model is applicable to identify parameters that have a large impact on the generation and propagation of vibrations for calculating track-soil interaction forces and predicting the ground-borne vibrations.
