Death is a matter in question that the aged who are nearest aging and death anxiety are facing. Having desirable attitudes about death and positive coping with it are developmental tasks in the later period of life. They are very critical to accomplishing the duty of the whole life and improving the life quality of the same period. In the aging society where more attention and services are given to the old generation, the education of death preparation is more needed. The purpose of this study is to develop a program that help old people aged 65 or over have better understanding and attitudes about death and examine effects of the program. For the purpose, this researcher set several research tasks such as investigating the current status of studies about death preparation education, developing a program of the education and determining effects of the program. The program developed here consisted of 6 sessions titled 'Courageous Exploration', 'Man before Death', 'The Contemplation of My Life', 'Blessed Death', 'Future with Hope' and 'Giving the Torch'. The program was applied to 16 old people aged 65 or over for 6 sessions with one session a week based. The objectives of the program were allowing the aged to firmly establish the view of death and express death with confidence, helping those people reduce death anxiety and develop positive and sound behaviors and providing the old generation with coping skills for contemplating the past part of life and planning hopeful future. Results of the study can be summarized as follows. First, the program of death preparation education focused on the maximization of death anxiety reduction and death acceptance and improvement in skills of coping with the rest of life. Considering this nation's social and cultural characteristics in which talking about death is tabooed, the program stressed that old people should freely express their emotions about the matter. In addition, the program sought towards improving skills of coping with upcoming death by making better recognized developmental tasks to be accomplished in the later period of life. Second, the program was effective in reducing the surveyed the aged's death anxiety and improving their life satisfaction. Results of pre- and post-tests showed that the mean of scores for death anxiety lowered after the program than before it, with a statistically significant difference. The mean of scores for life satisfaction increased after the program from before it, also with a statistically significant difference. Thus the program had effects of reducing participants' death anxiety and improving their life satisfaction. Third, the program contributed to improving the surveyed old people's ability of better preparing for upcoming death. The participants' self-reports showed that old people surveyed here realized having a desirable view of death would be critical to reducing death anxiety and accepting death and that those people obtained substantial experiences and knowledge necessary for coping better with death. Out of the total the aged surveyed here, albeit aged, 97% favorably participated in the program throughout the period of 6 weeks. These educational effects resulted from the emphasis of a new recognition about death in every session of the program, application of various educational methods, activities and feedbacks making possible the learners' expression of their thoughts and emotions, the aged's obtaining experiences and knowledge about death preparation and improvement of their life quality through raising skills of reducing death anxiety and coping better with upcoming death.
