This is a study that examines the fashion changes in the 20th century in terms of various subcultures in the period. Starting from defining the concept and the developing process of subculture, this study traces the history of subcultural styles from 1930s to 1990s, focusing on the way each generation resisted the main stream through its styles. This study is intended to provide a theoretical frame on the understanding of subcultural styles, whose role gets more and more important these days, with a close examination of its formative and developing process and characteristics. This retrospective analysis can be also of great help in predicting the changes in fashion trend in the near future. This study consists of five chapters: Chapter 2 defines the concept of a subculture in relation to the meaning it has to the main culture. Since a subcultural style play an important role in determining the direction of fashion trend of a period, more focus is given on deciding when the "subcultural style" begins to emerge historically. Chapter 3 conducts a close examination of various subcultural styles from 1930s to 1990s, by dividing this time span into six periods: 1930s-1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. It describes the formation and development of the subcultural style of each period in detail. Chapter 4, with a theoretical framework on these subcultural styles in mind, classifies and analyzes the styles dealt with in chapter 3 under four types according to how they resisted the main stream. Chapter 5 diagnoses the direction the subcultural styles have taken, and tries to find an answer to the question whether the subcultural styles continue to exert a powerful influence on the formation of fashion in the future. The subcultural styles examined and analyzed in this study are mainly British and American, with a few European and Western Indian styles included. The styles dealt with in this study are as follows: Zoot and western style in the 1930s to 1940s period; Lots of subcultural styles flourished in the period of 1950s. For example, caribbean, biker, hipster, beatnik, teddy boy, modernist, folky, rockabilly, ton-up boy, surfer style, and so on. In 1960s, there were mod, rocker, rude boy, psychedelic, hippy, greaser and skinhead style. Funk, glam, rasrafarian, headbanger, skater, and punk style were the notable subcultures in the 70s. New romantic, goth, casual, psychobilly, fetish, b-boy, raggamuffin, new age traveller, raver, and indie kid were the subcultural styles of the 80s. Finally, grunge and techno & cyberpunk are prominent subcultural styles in the period of 1990s. This study understands subcultural style as a way of deviate or resistant expression within a society. It differentiates itself from the main style by deliberately and publicly asserting its own identity, and, as a result, realizes in the form of fashion its repressed subconsciousness, resistance to the alienation from the society, and deviation from the normative ethics and morality of a society. The four types of subcultural styles presented in chapter 4 are based on their form of resistance, and they are classified and analyzed as follows: The first type is revision, which tries to revise and change the given form by adding new elements. There are two kinds of revision, one is dressing up, which dresses for success, and the other is minimal dressing. Zoot, caribbean, western, teddy boy, rockabilly, casual style are included here. As minimal dressing, there are hipster, beatnik, modernist, mod, rude boy style. Hyperbole is the second type, which resists by emphasizing or hyperbolizing the main stream with its erotic, nihilistic, or dynamic forms. Two kinds of hyperbole are examined, one is hyperbole of masculinity, and the other is ostentatious hyperbole. Biker, ton-up boy, rocker, greaser, skinhead and headbanger style are included in the first kind, and funk, raggmuffin, b-boy style belong to the second one. The third type is reversal and rejection, which reverses the forms from the established sign system into its own secret code, or rejects the traditional taboos. This type include no dressing, and the reversal of sex identity. Skater, indie kid, grunge subcultural style belong to no dressing, which realize the esthetics of ugliness against the stereotypes under traditional costume esthetics. Glam, punk, new romantic, goth, pshychobilly, fetish and riot grrrl style reverse the traditional sex identity and challenges to its taboos in the form of androgyny, unisex, homosexuality, bisexuality, and fetishism. Isolation and redrawal is the fourth type, which tries to distance itself from the ritual code of the day. This type is divided into dressing of the escape from time, and dressing of the escape from space. The first group of this type is characterized by nostalgia or futurism, and includes rastafarian, psychedelic, raver, techno & cyberpunk style. An emphasis is given on ethnicity, naturalism, or a closed space within a city in dressing of the escape from space. Surfer, folky, hippy, new age traveller style belong here. In conclusion, it can be said that subcultural style puts the foremost importance on individual freedom. Hand-made clothes like soiled denim jacket ornamented with badges, patches, paint decorations are also preferred in these styles. Many juveniles favor second-hand markets and subcultural members within a society, which reflects their passion for the credible retro clothing, as well as their poor economical state. Since 1990s, the distinction between the subcultural styles and high fashion gets somewhat blurred, while the liberal, sexual, life stylistic tension between the two groups are heightened. The new and significant development in the 90s can be found in the fact that, for the first time in history, subcultural style emerges as a dominating force in our culture. This implies that the fresh energy of a subculture is essential as a formative force of a society. Maybe this explains the reason why the high fashion designers find constant energy and inspiration from these inexhaustible resource.
