It is known that the DTM(Digital Terrain Model) generation is almost impossible using SAR imagery of the area containing lots of layover and shadowing due to steep topography. Also, if there is not the GPS surveying data nor the geographical map for such area, it will be very difficult to generate DTM from optical imagery. However, Ground control points(GCPs) can be extracted from SAR data given precise orbit for DTM generation using optic images. In this study, we extract GCPs from ERS SAR Image and SRTM DEM. Although it is very difficult to identify GCPs extracted from ERS SAR Image, the geometry of SPOT satellite image is able to be corrected and more precise DTM can be constructed from stereo SPOT satellite images. In this study, 51 GCPs were obtained from the ERS SAR data. Comparison between obtained GCPs and points estimated from national 1:5,000 digital maps was performed and the mean values of distance errors were 64.1m, 56.7m and 22.5m with standard deviations of 52.9m, 48.7m, and 19.9m in geocentric X, Y, and Z coordinates, respectively. After removing GCPs of which residuals fell outside 95.4% of probability distribution while geometry correction of SPOT satellite image, there was improvement in accuracy of remained GCPs. Errors of 21 remained GCPs were 14.6m, 11.5m and 8.2m with standard deviations of 9.4m, 7.1m, and 5.2m in geocentric X, Y, and Z coordinates, respectively. The geometries of SPOT stereo pair were corrected by 7 to 21 remained GCPs from ERS SAR data, and r.m.s. errors were 1.4~6.2m, 5.4~8.5m and 13.9~17.4m in geocentric X, Y, and Z coordinates, respectively. By the way, when the geometries of SPOT stereo pair were corrected by 7 to 30 GCPs from national 1:5,000 digital maps, r.m.s. errors were 2.8~5.8m, 2.4~5.6m and 12.8~19.9m in geocentric X, Y, and Z coordinates, respectively. The DTM constructed by GCPs from ERS SAR data was almost as accurate as the DTM constructed by GCPs from national 1:5,000 digital maps. A DTM, through a method of area based matching with pyramid images, was generated by SPOT stereo images.
