This research looks at problems married people face over their married life in various family life cycle. In this study, the problems are looked at in more detail utilizing the Korean-Marital Satisfaction Inventory, K-MSI. In particular, this research attempts to understand marriage problems from a new angle by observing these problems according to the changes in family life cycle. The result of this research is to be used for couple treatment and developing couple programs that are aimed at reducing dissatisfaction in married life and making married relationships better. K-MSI used in this research is a multidimensional standard in evaluating the degree of marriage dissatisfaction from across 11 areas of married life. K-MSI helps to find the areas that need to be focussed on in couple treatment. Furthermore, K-MSI is an appropriate tool for examining the purpose of this research, which is to explain various problems married people face in various stages of their family life and achieve a general understanding on married people in terms of their couple relationships, their married lives and their families. The subject of this research was 330 married men and women residing in the areas of Seoul and Gyung-Gi, Daegu and Gyung-buk, Gang-won and some others who had some degree of dissatisfaction in their married lives. The collected data was analysed using frequency analysis, reliability analysis and ANOVA depending on the type of research purpose. The following is the summary of the research. First, from observing the overall degree of marriage satisfaction according to the family life cycle, it was shown that the married people in the Child Schooling cycle (Stage 3) and in the Child Marrying Cycle (Stage 6) had significantly higher level of dissatisfaction than those in Marriage Adaptation Cycle (Stage 1). This showed that the dissatisfaction was the lowest among the newly weds and it increased as coupled progressed onto the later stages. Second, observing the overall degree of dissatisfaction and the 11 K-MSI classified areas in married males and females according to family life cycle showed that married females in Child Youth Cycle (Stage 4) and Child Marrying Cycle (Stage 6) had significantly higher dissatisfaction than those in Marriage Adaptation Cycle (Stage 1). However, a similar trend was not observed for married males. Therefore, when we looked at overall degree of dissatisfaction in married men and women according to the family life cycle, women showed higher degree of dissatisfaction than men overall. In the Joint Time Trouble area, married females in Child Youth Cycle (Stage 4) scored significantly higher than those in Marriage Adaptation Cycle (Stage 1). It showed that the former group felt that they lacked joint activities and common hobbies or interests. However, across all family life cycle, married males did not show troubles about joint time. Considering that men have at their expense more spare time than women and women spend more time in raising children than men, we can deduce from this result that married men have lesser frustration and lower dissatisfaction about spare time than women who assume more practical responsibility in house labour and raising children. Thirdly, the following shows the result of observing K-MSI lower area according to background variables. Differences in joint time trouble, overall dissatisfaction rate, and sexual satisfaction were observed according to the number of children. Married people with 2 or 3 or more children had more troubles with joint time than childless people. Married people with 1 child showed significantly higher dissatisfaction than childless people, and childless people showed significantly higher sexual dissatisfaction than married people with 3 or more children. Differences in the age of married people showed differences in overall dissatisfaction, joint time trouble and child dissatisfaction. Married people in their 40s, 50s and 60s showed significantly higher degree of dissatisfaction in married life than those in their 20s who are in the early stages of married life. Those in their 50s showed significantly higher troubles regarding joint time and spare time. Those in their 40s and 50s showed more dissatisfaction about their children than those in their 30s. Married people showed differences in their attitudes to sex roles and child dissatisfaction. The married people in Seoul-Gyunggi area scored higher in the non-traditional sex role attitude area than those in Daegu-Gyungbuk. This showed that the former group had more open attitude towards sex roles. Married people in Daegu-Gyungbuk showed higher dissatisfaction in children than those in Seoul-Gyunggi and it meant that those in Daegu-Gyunggi were having more dissatisfaction, concerns, disappointments, and trouble with children. According to the religion, married people of Buddhism and no religion showed significantly higher degree of dissatisfaction in overall than Christian married people. According to the marriage type, introduced marriages showed greater dissatisfaction on children than love marriages. According to the length of relationship leading up to the marriage, those with less than 1 year had more troubles in joint time between the couple and utilization of spare time than those with 3-4 years. Married people showed differences in overall dissatisfaction and joint time trouble according to the length the marriage. People who had been married for 6 years or more showed greater overall dissatisfaction than those with 5 years or less. Those who had been married for 6-10 years had more trouble with couple joint time and spare time activities than those who had been married for 1-5 years. Married people showed differences in abuse, attitude towards sex roles and child dissatisfaction according to their monthly income. Married people earning more than 2 million won a month received more physical or non-physical abuse than those without income or below 1 million won a month. However, no previous studies have been done on income versus abuse, and no significant relationship can be identified by this research either. It showed that married people earning between 2 and 3 million won a month had more open attitude towards sex roles than those without income. Married people without income were more dissatisfied with their children than those earning between 2 and 3 million won a month. According to the level of education, married people who are university graduates were more dissatisfied with emotional communication than those who completed lower high school. But the latter were more dissatisfied with their children than the former. These various results show that the areas affecting the degree of marriage satisfaction for couples vary greatly according to the family situation and family cycle that the couples are in. Stability of marriage in this country is influenced more by other conditions related to group- and family-oriented culture of this country than satisfaction in the immediate relationship of the couple alone. Therefore, it is important to attempt to understand marriage issues inlight of the family, society and cultural environments surrounding the couple which change dynamically, rather than understanding the issues merely from the immediate relationship between the couple.
