This study was attempted to examine and analyze detailed contents and methodology of expression in major pieces of artwork from the artifacts produced during MA course from 2000 to 2001, which is a theoretical ground of the author's work of painting. Nature has provided the most varied materials for almost every genre, ranging from ancient to modern art. Considering nature highlighted as a focal point in expression, description of an object went way beyond superficial imitations or a sensitive and material world; instead, it emphasized absolute and immaterial values, portraying an eternal object. In this aspect, abstraction of nature using artists' own interpretation and expression through subjectivism and sensitivity has come to be required, rejecting the simple carbon-copying of nature. This study of artwork was attempted to express the artist's inner world in the process of abstraction of inspiration from nature, rather than representation of concrete object, and thus to examine abstract expression of images through intuition and description of temporally based nature's elan-vital so that the method of expression using materialistic tone of quality and at the same time randomly-chosen tone of color, which reveals internalized lyrical sensitivity, were focused. Furthermore, the colorful and complex features of nature contain not only a perfect form of beauty but also the essence of internal existence. The origin of this beauty of nature comes from "elan vital". "Life" is the origin of existence. Accordingly, it was considered as a potential power for human beings, nature, living, and art. For this reason, the author chose these as a theme and simplified and polarized an object with a contemplative view so as to express inner sensitivity and pure nature. This study began with observation of the images of leaves, which are one of nature's components, as a work motive. Motive from nature has been offering materials to the area of art constantly, from the earliest ancient art in Roman murals or mosaics in BC 2 and Pompeii murals to modern abstract art today portraying nature, producing different and varied ways of expression. In particular, after expressionism, ideas and concepts with a lot of varied and eccentric expressions emerged from the complex social structure and environment; among them, lyric abstactism, which stressed freedom of thinking and sensitivity, greatly influenced modern art expression. A leaf represents limitedness since its stage is in the latter period of a tree's life, and, at the same time, endlessness, which functions as a circle of life, returning to nature to become part of a forest. In other words, it means the circle of nature over time that seems be 'reincarnation', an oriental Buddhist idea. The author attempted to look at reality (factualism) by observing leaf and forest. Also, the author attempted to show a subjective view of a tree by observing the changes of leaf within a timeframe and expressing a continuous stem as a line, and to find the meaning of time as a cause for reciprocal changes on the two elements. This study is an attempt to grope for a new possibility by objectification of the formative ground-base through the initiatives of the work and its method of expression based on the theoretical ground of how the work on images of tree and forest were expressed.
