Danryeung came to be the official attire for both execution of public duties and ordinariness during the reign of King Sejong. By the end of the Chosun Dynasty, the Danryeung had been the official uniform of civil and military officers for about 500 years. Much research has been done about the Danryeung; however, most of these studies are fragmentary and mainly focused on the origin, evolution, and the construction of the Danryeung. In this study, I researched the characteristics of the Danryeung through documentary records. By conducting practical studies on the existing relics, I was able to analyze changes in the basic elements of construction and the evolution of the Danryeung. Moreover, in order to conduct a more comprehensive study, I have incorporated the results of some newly excavated sites and have carried out a comparative study of the Danryeung in portraits, documentary records, and relics. These results are categorized into four periods, according to the changes in partial shapes. The results are as follows: 1. The characteristics of Danryeung from the study of documentary records 1) The different terminologies used to refer to the Danryeung are ‘Dan-ryeung-ui’, ‘Dan-ryeung-po’, ‘Dan-ryeung-sam’,‘Won-ryeung-ui’, 'Won-ryeung-po’, ‘Won-ryeung’. Though all of these words are one and the same, and refer to the same article of clothing, the terms ‘Dan-ryeung-ui’ and ‘Won-ryeung-ui’ were more often used to refer to the Danryeung when it was worn for mourning or religious ceremonies. 2) The occasions for which the Danryeung was worn can be organized into four categories. The first category includes auspicious religious services, the second, auspicious ceremonies in the royal court, such as state weddings and enthronements. In addition, the Danryeung was also worn during funeral rites and various mourning ceremonies. Lastly, government officials wore the Danryeung when greetings foreign envoys or when going abroad as diplomats. 3) The fabric with which Danryeung was made include cotton, hemp, ramie, silk. 4) Danryeung can be found in a variety of colors, including white, gray, red, jade green, green, blue, and black. White Danryeung was worn mainly during religious services, funeral rites, and mourning. Gray Danryeung was so popular during the reign of King Sejong, that wearing gray Danryeung became prohibited by law. Red Danryeung was worn only by judicial officers or government officials, during working hours. Jade green Danryeung was worn during mourning rituals, funeral rites, or religious services, while green Danryeung was usually given as a royal gift or worn for religious ceremonial occasions. Government officers wore blue Danryeung during religious services, funeral rites, or when they performed their official duties. Black Danryeung was worn as a uniform by government officials during the workday or during religious ceremonies. 2. The changes in the basic elements of construction and the shapes of Danryeung through a practical study of relics The results can be categorized into four periods, according to the changes in partial shapes. The division of periods are as follows: 1st period: early Chosun dynasty to the late 16th century, 2nd period: early 17th century to the late 17th century, 3rd period: 18th century to the middle of 19th century, 4th period: middle of 19th century to around 1910). Seven basic elements of construction were analyzed. 1) The number of layers in the Danryeung: Though the documentary records of the first period indicted that both single-layered and double-layered Danryeung were worn during this period, the excavated relics of Danryeung were all single layered. Most of the double-layered Danryeung were royal gifts. A large majority of the Danryeung were made out of cotton, and the most popular colors were dark blue, jade green, and dark green. During the second period, both single-layered and double-layered relics of Danryeung were found. Through this find, I have come to speculate that both single-layered and double-layered Danryeung were worn from the beginning of the second period. The relics of the third period were all double-layered Danryeung. The inner layer had a ‘Jik-ryeong’ (straight neckline) and the outer layer a ‘Danryeung’(round neckline). These layers were made separately and then attached together. Parts such as the inner collar, outer collar, and gusset of the two layers were attached by a loose hemming. The hemlines were also sewn together in the same manner. Only double-layered Danryeung were found during the fourth period. The method of sewing three and four layers together was introduced during this period. The latter sewing method is still in use today. 2) The Difference in the lengths of the front and back panel: 10 out of the 21 relics of the Danryeung from the first period showed differences in the lengths between the back and front panels. The front panel was shorter than the back panel, and the difference between the two sides ranged from 3 to 11 centimeters. No difference in length was noted from the relics of second, third, and fourth period. 3) Fabric: Through there weren’t any restrictions on which fabrics can be used to make Danryeung, cotton, hemp, ramie and silk were the fabrics that were usually used. The breadth of the fabric was diverse, ranging from 33cm to 65cm. 4) Sleeves: The sleeve shapes of the Danryeung changed from period to period. Sleeves of the first period were generally long and narrow, with a narrow opening; in the second period, the middle part of the sleeves became wider; during the third period, the end of sleeves became wider; the styles of both the first and third period were utilized in the fourth period. 5) Mu (Side pleats): Each period had a distinctive style of Mu. The shape, sewing, and number of pleats were all interconnected with the other elements of the Danryeung, such as the shape of the Seop and sleeves. 6) Coat String: Both the loop and tie string were used during the first period. In the second period, loop strings disappear while the tie string becomes longer and wider. Double strings are first seen in the relics of the fourth period. Later on, Danryeung with buttons, instead of strings, are used. 3. I have researched the changes and features of the shapes of Danryeung. The study has analyzed the Danryeung as shown in portraits; the various features are categorized into the following six elements. 1) Collar: The overall height and width of the collar as drawn in portraits has been proven to correspond with the remaining relics. Collars become wider and more-angled in the late Choson period. 2) The shape and the width of the sleeves in portraits seem to be similar to that of the relics. However, the sleeves of Kwon, Dae Woon (1612-1699) are a bit different, as they are a bit wider than those of the same period. 3) The above stated characteristic shape of Mu does not apply to the periods of following portraits: Jo Mal Saeng(1370-1447), Jo Sun (14C-early 15C), Kim Yuk(1580-1658), Huh Mok(1595-1682), Kwon Dae Woon. 4) Color and fabric: Though there are some differences, the overall color of Danryeung in portraits and relics also correspond to the documented records. It is believed that the pigments of the painting, the quality of the printing as well as the color of Cholik (inner jacket) underneath Danryeung affect the resulting color. In portraits, the Danryeung are drawn in various colors; green, blue or deep green Danryeung are mostly used during the first period, indigo, dark blue, black, green and deep green in the second, and dark blue and deep green in the third. During the fourth period, the colors black, blue and dark blue are typically used to draw the Danryeung. Generally, the Danryeung are drawn with darker colors; however, further research is needed to see whether this particular characteristic applies only portraits or if there is a special reason behind this phenomenon. Among the several motifs of Danryeung that were found, notably the cloud motif shows changes in its shape from period to period. Some of the cloud motifs found in portraits have a ribbon string attached to it; this does not correspond to the features usually found in the Danryeung of this period. These different characteristics can be found in portraits of Jo, Mal Saeng, Jo, Sun, and Byun, Su(1447-1524). 5) Waist belt: Though there were restrictions on who could wear belts made of certain materials, as according to class ranks, these laws were not obeyed; people usually wore the material restricted to the persons of higher ranks. 6) Headdress and shoes: The Samo (official hat) underwent five changes through the four periods; the shape changed with the height of the top and the silhouette of the side wings (e.g. straight wings or curved wings). Park, Soon (1523-1589), however wears a Samo that does not correspond with the rest of the hats of this period. And though most of portraits show Mokhwa(black leather shoes), Shin, Sook Joo (1417-1475), Sohn, Soe(1433-1484), Jang, Mal Son (1431-1486) of the first period and Jo, Young Bok(1672-1728) of the third wear Baikhwa (white leather shoes). As mentioned above, research has undertaken the study of Danryeung relics and portraits and has made a comparison between these two categories by using the remaining archives. However, there was some difficulty in defining the system of Shibok (Danryeung without embroidered patches) and Sangbok (daily official costume). It is important to note that the fabrics used for Shibok do not have any motifs at all. Further research is required, though, as archives and relics were compared only with portraits for this research. Other painted objects, besides portraits, as well as additional relics are expected to be utilized for future research.
