The purpose of this study was to examine what factors concerned institutionalized adolescents' readiness for independent living from micro, mezzo and macro standpoint based on a generalist practice approach in an effort to identify what types of down-to-earth intervention should be provided for them to stand on their own feet. The research questions were posed as below: 1. Do the personal and family factors of adolescents under residential care affect their readiness for independent living? 2. Do the factors of residential care affect their readiness for independent living? 3. Do the factors of local community affect their readiness for independent living? 4. What has the biggest impact on their readiness for independent living? 5. Are there any gaps in readiness for independent living among working adolescents, teenagers preparing for finding a job and college students? The subjects in this study were teenagers who got training in 12 job training centers after being provided residential care. After a survey was conducted, the responses from 182 adolescents were analyzed. Linear regression analysis, logistic regression analysis, one-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test and reliability test were implemented, and the job training center employees were interviewed. To identify what factors were tied into the teenagers' readiness for independent living, three independent variables were selected, which included micro-, mezzo- and macro-variables. The micro-variables were work ethics, social characteristics and support from parents and relatives. The mezzo-variables were services provided by institutes and ties with institute employees, and the macro-variables were social support and resource utilizing. The selected independent variable was readiness for independent living, and its sub-variables were a will to be independent, daily task performance skills, interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, employment, academic skills and vocational readiness skills. The major findings about the hypotheses formulated in this study were as follows: First, regarding the hypothesis about the relationship of personal and family variables to readiness for independent living, their work ethics exercised a significant influence on their will to be independent, daily task performance skills, interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, employment and job skills preparation. School adjustment had a significant impact on daily task performance skills and interpersonal skills, and academic achievement exerted a significant influence on a will to be independent, daily task performance skills, interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills and job skills preparation. Their work experience significantly affected their interpersonal skills, and support from relatives significantly impacted on their will to be independent. Parent support had no significant influence on readiness for independent living. Second, as for the hypothesis about connection between the institute variables and readiness for independent living, their interpersonal skills were significantly affected by institutional support to help them to find a job and participate in social gathering or group. Counseling about independence and employment exerted a significant influence on their daily task performance skills, problem-solving skills, employment and job skills preparation, and their relations with institute employees significantly impacted on their interpersonal skills. Reinforcing their strengths for independent living had no significant impact, and collaborative services exerted a significant yet adverse influence on their problem-solving skills. Self-supporting education also had a significant yet adverse impact on their employment. Third, concerning the hypothesis about relations between local community variables and readiness for independent living, joining local gathering or group exercised a significant influence on daily task performance skills and job skills preparation, and harnessing local services available significantly affected daily task performance skills and interpersonal skills. Social support didn't significantly impacted on readiness for independent living. Fourth, as to the hypothesis about the most influential variable on readiness for independent living, their will to be independent was affected by work ethics and academic achievements, and academic achievements exerted a higher influence on that. Their daily task performance skills were significantly influenced by work ethics, school adjustment, academic achievements, self-supporting counseling and local group membership, and work ethics had the biggest impact on that. Interpersonal skills were significantly affected by work ethics, school adjustment, presence or absence of relatives and institute employees, and work ethics had the greatest impact on that. Problem-solving skills were significantly influenced by work ethics and academic achievements, and the former was more influential. Their employment was significantly affected by work ethics and counseling, and counseling was most influential. Academic skills were significantly affected by school adjustment and ties with institute employees, and the latter was most influential. Job skills preparation was significantly influenced by work ethics, academic achievements, counseling, local group membership and gender, and academic achievements were most influential. Fifth, in regard to the hypothesis about gap in readiness for independent living among the three different groups including the working adolescents, teenagers preparing for finding a job and college students, only their daily task performance skills were different from one another, and there's no gap in the other sub-variables. When posttest was conducted, the daily task performance skills of the working teenagers were different from those of the adolescents preparing for employment, but there's no gap between the college students and working adolescents. The above-mentioned findings suggested that from a generalist practice viewpoint, there were many factors to have a definite impact on the readiness of the institutionalized adolescents for independent living. In the future, they should systematically be assisted to build the right work ethics and stand on their own feet. Employment counseling should be provided to them, and their parents and families should be encouraged to help them support themselves. School and regular teachers also should join forces in facilitating their school adjustment and offering individual guidance and remedial classes to improve their academic achievements. They also should build trustworthy and friendly relations with institute employees, and sustained follow-up care should be given to them after they are no longer eligible for residential care. While they are under residential care, they should receive career education to go on to college, and they also should keep acquiring job skills. Local community and the government should give more financial backing for job training centers to secure enough professional manpower and prepare quality self- supporting programs. It's needed to take legal steps to lend assistance to their independent living, and they should be selected as recipients of livelihood protection for a specific period of time to keep their livelihood. And they should be allowed to stay under residential care for a longer period of time, and student grant should be supplied to college students.
